Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
JACOB FRIEDERIUII SCHNEIDER, yOF BOOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKATES.
Spocilieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,247, dated July 14. 1863.
To all whom it may concer:
Be it known that I, lMooi; FRIEDERICH SCHNEIDER, a native ot' YVurteinburg, Germany, but now residing,ir in the city of Brooklyn,
county of Kings, and State of New York, have j invented certain new and useful Improve- -ineiits in Skates; and I dohereby declare that the. following is a full and correct description thereof, reference being had to the aunexed drawiiigs,'and to the letters ot' refer- .ence thereon.
The first part of my said invention consists in forking,` the after part of the runner, the heel of the skater beine` thereby supportedby two runners, which converge together and unite with the single fore part ot' the runner at a point about the middle 0f the skate, or under the instep of the skater. The object otl this is to facilita-te the learning of the art of skating by ladies and Vtimid persons, by provlding them with a tiriner support than the single ruimer affords at the heel, and at the same time they can, by raising' the heel, skate on the single fore' part of the runnerg' and this part of in v invention further consists in combining with the forked ruimer a, wheel placed on a suitable axis between the forks of the runner, Vso as to run in line with the fore part ot' the runner, and having itsperiphery project a little below t-lie edges ot' the forked pait ot' the runner between which itis placed, so that when the skate is horizontal, or nearly so, the forked part will-run clear of the ice,
ai'ording support when the ankle of the skater turns.
The second part f my invention consists in securing the leathers or straps to the stock of the skate as follows: The stock is divided .i
f into two parts horizontally from end to end,- l and suitable recesses are cut ineither ofthe g members-for the reception' ot that part of the straps or leathers to be secured therein, the ends of which are sewed fast to iron Wires,-
wliich project at each end a little beyond the strap'. A jog' is cut in the corner oi' each recess `to receive the ends *of the wires. When the leathersare placed with their wires in the recesses, the members ot' the skatestock are screwed together in any suitable manner.
By this means straps and leathers may be secured to the stock, and readily removedtlierefrom when required..
ends ofthe wires.
' l'claim- 1. The forked ruimer. substantially as described.
2. rlhe wheel, in combination with the forks of the forked ruimer, substantially as described.
3. Securing, the leathers within the twopart. stock by incansgof the wires fand jogs in the recesses g, in the manner specified.
JACOB FRIEDERICII SCHNEIDER. Witnesses:
CHA. E. TODD, FnEDRioK LEONARD.
