Description
UNiTEn STATES PATENT o'EEicE.
ASA WHEELER, OF BRATTLEBOBO, VERMONT.
SKATE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,295, dated August 30, 1859'.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA WHEELER, ot' Brattleboro, in the county of lVindham and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, ret'- erence being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l, represents a perspective view of a skate with my improvement attached.. Fig. 2, is a' longitudinal section, showing the heelpiece in two positions. Fig. 3, is a bottom view of lthe heel part of the stock, also showing the heel in two positions.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the three ligures.
My invention is an improvement in fastening the skate lto the boot or shoe and tightening the same thereto after the skate has been strapped to the foot.
A, represents 'the stock of the skate; B, the runner fixed thereto; C, the front straps; and D the heel-case and ankle strap.
E, is a portion of the stock extending out to form the heel-part, having its sides slightly beveled. Upon this rests an adjustable heelpiece F, with a metal strap Gr veX- tending under and across the portion of the stock, which serves in a great measure 'to keep the heelpiece steady and Solid upon the portion E.
Through the center of the heelpiece F passes a thumb-screw H, which turns freely in said piece, but is prevented having any longitudinal play by being provided with collars, and said screw passes into the rear part of the stock A, and lthrough a nut J, let into the top of the stock; by this means the heelpiece can be adjusted and the skate tightened upon 4the foot as follows: The Stock of the skate is distended so as to allow the shoe to be put into the skate. The straps are then tightened up and buckled, and the heelpiece screwed up tightly, driving the shoe up firmly into the skate, as will be comfortable to the wearer, and securing the skate rigidly to the shoe.
I do not claim the broad idea of securing the skate to the foot by longitudinal compression between 'the toe and heel, produced by means of a screw at the heel, for this is shown in the patent of D. H. Shirley April 12, 1859, but
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
The arrangement and combination of the adjustable heel piece F, heel case D, stock E, screw H, and front straps C, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
' ASA WHEELER.
