IMPROVEMENT IN BrisK-MAT.

The Schedule'refen'ed to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sanne To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN P. SMUCKER; of Ashland, in the countyof Ashland, and State of .Ohio,have in- .venteda new and useful-Imprmement in Husk-Mats; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.

The nature of this invention relates to the construction and manufacture of floor-mats, and consists in making them from cornhusksor other similar ma.-V terial, secured in and through a metallic-sheet base, in a new and novel manner, as more fully hereinafter described.

In the drawings- A represents a sheetanetal base, of any desired size, shape, and form. This base is perforated, at intervals of about haltl an iuch apart, in each direction, with square holes, the instrument with which the perforations are made being ot such a peculiar shape as to commence cutting in the centre, and outwardly toward 'each course of the pertbrations, in such a manner that there will be tin-ned downward a lip', a, upon each side of the square of the perforation, each lip being triangular in shape, With-its base forming one side of the perforation.

Tuftsof husks are then taken, folded in the centre of their lengths, and the folds then presented to. and inserted through the perforations from thetop of the metallic base, until all said perforations are illed, taking care that the folds below the base shall be-all on the saure plane, and of equal length below said base.

The lips a may then, by m'eans of a clamp or vise, be made to clasp and hold the' tufts vin place securely, while the folds serve as feet b to the mat. y

The'upper part of the husks may be trimmed ot' to any uniform length desired.

The husks may be colored, and so marked as to present a pleasing variety of figures on the face of the mali.'

I do not confine myself strictly to. a sheet-metal base, as described, for a wooden base may be use d, hy employing some suitable device to hold the tufts in place.

NVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
