FORREST REIOHARD, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,319, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed February 24, 1885.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FORREST REIOHARD, of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Lantern, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new and improved lantern. Fig; 2 is a sectional eleva- Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. aisa sectional plan view taken on the line 3 y of Fig. 2.
The invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination'of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the base of the lantern. This is by preference made of cast-iron, with the flange a, to receive the lower end of the glass body B of the lantern, which body is by preference an ordinary I glass lampchimney.
Secured in suitable holes made in the base A are the ends of the bent wire 0, over which (No model.)
the passage of the wire 0, and folded across the center, as shown at e, to rest upon the top of the body B, and thus elevate the body of the cap above the upper edge of the body B, to furnish free draft for the lantern, and at the same time prevent wind from extinguishing the lantern.
Constructed as described, the lantern is prac tical, very cheap, not liable to get out of order, and may be hung up or set down, as desired, and it has a handsome appearance, and is not liable to be blown out.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a lantern consisting of the base A, having a flange, a,and candle-holding devices, the lampchimney B, resting within the flange a, the bent-wire handle 0, secured at its lower free ends to the base and extended up through "the chimney, contacting with the contracted portion thereof to hold said chimney vertical, and the cap having a slot, through which the handle passes, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the base A, the chimney B, and the bent-wire handle 0, passed up through the same, of the cap ,E, folded across the center, as shown at e, to elevate the cap above the chimney, and slotted at e for the handle to pass through, substantially as set forth.
FORREST REIOHARD.
