IMPROVEMENT IN COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,353, dated April 1, 1873; V:application led January 25, 1873.
. To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW FLATLEY, ot Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collars, of which the followin g is a specification:

My invention has for its Vobject to improve the construction of linen and other collars to adapt them to receive an ornamental clasp. The invention consists in forming an obtuse salient angle on each of the inner sides of the lappets of a Byron collar, thus forming a triangular space above and below the same when the collar is adjusted for wear, as and for the purpose hereinafter described.
A represents the body ofthe collar to which the neck-band B is attached in the ordinary manner. The ends or lappets of the collar A are inclined from the center or near the'center, as shown in the drawing, forming salient angles a. The body A of the collar is made of such a length that the angles a may meet or nearly meet, and be connected to each other by a clasp, O, to keep the end parts of ,the collar securely in place.
By this construction angular openings are left between inner parts of the ends of the collar A toward their inner and outer edges. The inner angular opening allows the ends of the neck-band to be conveniently buttoned to the neck-band of the shirt. The neck-tie, when a small one, may project through the said inner opening. When a scarf neck-tie is used it should pass down beneath the connected ends of the collar A. The angles u and clasp C may also be used for supporting and confining a small neck-tie in place, rendering the use of an elastic loop unnecessary.,
Having thus described my invention I claim- As a new article of manufacture a turn down collar having each ot' its lappets inclined or cut awayfrom the center on the inner edge, as described and shown, to form a triangular spacel above and below the meeting points or centers a when the collar is adjusted for wear, as specified.
