Description

(No Model.)
B. S. NORTON.
COLLAR. v N0. 253,750. Patented Feb. 14,1882.
[in filial UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROWLAND S. NORTON, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
' COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,750, dated February 14,
Application filed December 22, 1881.
of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, and
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon.
.My invention relates to collars for ladies and gentlemens wear, known to the trade as standing collars, and it consists in so constructing the collar that a short portion of each end of the body will not be attached to the band, but finished around each end, so that there will be two opposite finished points or corners on each end of the body, and so that each end may be bent or laundered back at nearly right angles with the upper edge of the collar-body, for the purposes hereinafter set forth.
In my drawings, Figure l is a plan view of one end of the collar. Fig. 2 represents a complete collar with the ends turned back as de scribed.
Ais the body of the collar, the ends of which are cut away or detached from the band, and at an acute angle therewith, and turned backward on a line about parallel with the end of "the body, starting from the point of attachment to the band, as shown by the dotted line from X to X.
B is the band of the collar.
It is well known, and is a cause of general complaint, that in wearing standing collars the necktie, unless pinned down, is apt to slip up above the band and'expose the band to View and the wearer to ridicule, also. subject him to annoyance and inconvenience. To avoid these objections and to present a new and (No model.)
band edge, have a reverse cut. separating a portion of such ends from the band, so as to 'admit'of a turning back of such ends at about right angles with the remaining parts of the body. The ends are finished around to the pointofattachment to the band, and when laundered are turned back, as above described.
When the collar is buttoned to the neckband of the shirt the ends of the collar-body outwardly project beyond the band and serve as a guard to prevent the necktie from slipping up abovethe neckband. In addition to this advantage, a new, serviceable, and very stylish long top collar is produced.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a collar, the combination, with its band, of a collar-body having its outward ends, at their lower or band edge, detached from the band and turned outward, so as to serve as aguard to prevent the necktie from slipping up above the neckband, substantially as herein described.
In witnesswhercof I have hereto setmy hand this 5th day of December, 1881.
' ROWLAND S. NORTON.
