Description

l. McNEVEN.
Cumhined Overskirts and Mantles Patented March 17 IINITED STATES PATENT Grrron JOHN MONEVEN, or new YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED QVERSKIRTS AND MANTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148332, dated March 17, 1874; application filed February 6, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MGNEVEN, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Dresses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of the overskirt of a ladys dress in such a manner that it may be used, when desired, as a cloak or mantle, the hood of such cloak or mantle forming, when the garment is used as an overskirt, the bustle for the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention when used as a cloak or mantle and Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing it when used as an overskirt.
A represents the body of the cloak or overskirt, which may be cut semicircular, square, or other shape, to suit the taste of the wearer. It is gathered or plaited in at the top to fit the waistband B. This band may be cut straight or pointed, as desired. (3 represents the hood-bands, and D the hood, which latter may be cut pointed or round, to suit the fancy. The hood D is gathered or plaited in to fit the band C, to which it is fastened or sewed. The hood D and cloak A are connected together by sewing the band C to the inside of the band B, in such a manner as to allow the hood to turn under, the hood D thereby forming a bustle for the overskirt when worn as such.
The whole garment is fastened to the band of the underskirt by buttons and button-holes, or other suitable fastening devices. when worn as a skirt, and by suitable fastening in front when worn as a cloak.
The various parts may be cut to any particular style and shape desired, and trimmed in any desired manner.
Having .thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the body A, bands B and O, and hood D, when said parts are constructed and arranged as described, to form a combined overskirt and cloak or mantle, substantially for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses JOHN MONEVEN.
