Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,704, dated March 11, 1673.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that we,'B. E. GHOLLAR and J. G. J OHANNES, of Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wipers for Lamp Ohimneys; and we do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction'and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making. a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of our lamp-wiper. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to means for wipin g and cleaning lamp-chimneys, and other like purposes; and it consists in providing a rod or handle of suitable length with a number of points so constructed and arranged that they will take hold like hooks upon the wiping-cloth in every direction, backward,.forward, or rotary, in which the wiper may be moved. The object of the present invention is to provide a wiper which Will llOld the cloth when moved in any direction, thereby avoiding the inconvenience occasioned by the slipping of the wiper-head from the cloth when in use.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates therod or handle of the wiper. B
B indicate disks, rigidly secured to the rod at a little distance from each other, at the end which is to be introduced into the chimney.
Each of these disks is serrated around its cir cumference in such a manner as to provide a series of acute points or teeth, a, which are alternately bent forward and backward, forming hooks, which not only keep the cloth stretched between the disks, but also retain hold of the cloth whether the wiper be moved backward, forward, or horizontally in the chimney. It is not necessary to bend the points laterally to form hooks for holding the cloth during the rotary movement of the wiper, for it will be observed that the cloth is kept by the wall of the chimney snugly in contact with the points; and, further, that double the number of points act in retaining the cloth in the rotary movement. The disks afford a convenient and strong support to the teeth, but they may be attached in other ways to the shank or rod.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The wiper-rod, provided with the double an nular series of points a, alternately bent forward and backward to form hooks whereby the cloth will be held against any movement of the wiper, substantially as specified In testimonythat we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
BYRON E. OHOLLAR. Witnesses: JOHN G. J OHANNES.
