wlTNEsSEs ATTORNEY wcfi" My PRESLEY MYRES, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
EXPANSION-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1919.
Application led September 7, 1918. Serial No. 253,056.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, PRESLEY Mimes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in EX- pansion-Brushes, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to cleaning apparatus and the object of the same is to provide an improved device that is especially adapted for use in cleaning chimney flues, lamp shades or bottles.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device as above described that is simple in construction, efficient in operation and consists of the minimum number of parts.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings wherein;-
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the improved device constituting this invention, a portion being shown in longitudinal section, and
Fig. 2 is a view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
The form of my invention shown is dey signed for light work especially for use in cleaning bottles, lamp shades or the like.
In this form of my invention is provided a sleeve 25 having a pair of diametrically opposed grooves formed in the periphery thereof and placed therein, the upper portion of the supporting arms 26, that are retained in connection with the sleeve 25 by means of the caps 27 and 28 that snugly engage the upper and lower end as well as a portion of the periphery of the sleeve 25. Pivotally connected to each of the arms 26 are movable arms 29 that have brushes 30 detachably connected to the free end thereof by means of the bolts 31 and the thumb screws 32. It is of course to be understood that if it is not deemed necessary to use a brush in connection-with this invention, that a chamois or any other cleaning medium desired, can be attached by suitable means to the free ends of the movable arm 29. Pivotally secured to the arms 29 are links 33 that are pivotally connected at Copies of this patent may be obtainedl for their opposite ends with the lower end of the controlling rod 34. This rod 34, as clearly shown passes between the arms 26 and through the sleeve 25 into the socket 6 provided in the operating handle 37. As will be noted the rod 34 is suitably threaded for the greater portion of the length thereof and a nut 38 is counter-sunk in one end of the handle 37 and is in threaded engagement with the rod 34 whereby rotary movement of the handle 37 will move the rod relatively thereto, and by means 'of its pivotal connection `with the links 33 control the relative movement of the movable arms 29. i
In operation of this form of the invention, assuming that the apparatus is in a position as shown in the accompanying drawings the same can be moved inwardly, so as to allow for the insertion of the brushes in a bottle by means of rotating the handle 37. After the brushes 30 are in the body of the bottle, the handle 37 can be moved away from the sleeve 25, and by so doing the rod 34 will be `moved therewith and because of its pivotal connection with the links 33 will move the brushes 30 outwardly and into engagement with the sides of the bottle to be cleaned.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the forni and construction of this invention without departing from the material parts thereof. It is therefore not wished to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
What is claimed is A cleaning device, comprising asupport including a Ksleeve having a pair of arms connected therewith, a pair of movable arms on said first mentioned arms, having brushes at their free ends, links connected to said movable arms, an operating rod passing through said sleeve in pivotal connection with said links and means connected with said rod to control the movement of said brushes relatively to the su port.
In testimony whereof I agar my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PRESLEY MYRES.
