CLEANER FOR FUSE-CONTACTS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE B. STAF- FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cleaners for F use-Contacts, of which the following is a specification.

lVhen an electric fuse is burnt out, the inner surfaces of the contact of the fuse box are occasionally so badly burnt that it is customary to remove the fuse box and replace it by a new one. The object of the present invention is to provide means whereby the contacts can be rapidly and conveniently cleaned, thereby rendering it unnecessary to remove the fuse box.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the device; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device in operation.

Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a handle, the smaller or inner end of which is inserted with a snug fit into a metal block 2, to the sides of which are secured, by screws 3, extensions 4 from bearings 5, in which can turn a cylindrical cleaner head or body 6 of the same length and diameter as an electric fuse, and having the terminal portions 7, outside said bearings, knurled or roughened. The central portion of the cleaner body, between said bearings, is formed with longitudinally extending notches 9, any one of which is adapted to be entered by the free end of a plate spring 10 secured by a screw 12 to a side of the metal block 2.

In operation the head 6 of the device is inserted between the contacts 13 of the fuse boX in the same position as the fuse would be inserted therebetween, and is then, by

means of the handle, vibrated about its axis. The knurled or roughened portions of the head then abrade the inner surfaces of said contacts and remove the burnt and blackened portions thereof, rendering the con tacts again clean and fit for use with a fuse.

To insure even wear upon the abrasive portions of the head, the head is turned from time to time in the bearings. It will be turned automatically in one direction if the friction between the abrasive portions of the head and the contacts be greater than that between the head and the bearings, the spring then sliding over the head when the handle is turned in one direction but engaging one of said notches and moving the head therewith when the handle is turned in the other direction.

I claim 1. In a fuse box cleaner, the combination of a cylindrical head having roughened or knurled terminal abrasive portions, and a handle for turning said head, extending therefrom between the terminal portions.

2. In a fuse box cleaner, the combination of a cylindrical head having roughened or knurled terminal abrasive portions, a handle extending at right angles to the head, and means for adjusting the position of the handle about the axis of the head.

3. In a fuse box cleaner, the combination of a cylindrical head having roughened or knurled terminal abrasive portions, bearings for said head between said terminal portions, a handle rigidly related to said bearings, and a spring secured to said handle, the central portion of the head between the bearings being formed with notches to receive said spring.
