COMBINED STOVE SCRAPER AND BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,983, dated May 18, 1897.

To all whom, t may cmweruf Beit known that I, WILLIAM J. CRUTCHER, of Logan, in the county of Logan and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Stove Scraper and Brush, of which the following is a speciication.

The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and practical device for drawing the accumulated dust, ashes,and soot from the flues of a stove. The ordinary stove-scraper consists simply of a rod With a fiat T-shaped piece of metal riveted on its end. This liat piece is made quite narrow in order to permit it to be inserted through the narrow cleaningout slot in the stove-casing and itsiineifectiveness for the purpose is well known.

My invention comprises a special form of adjustable brush Whose plane is easily and conveniently changed, so that it may be inserted ilatwise through the slot in the stove and then turned to a position at right angles, whereby it not only presents a broad surface like a hoe to make an efficient scraper, but is armed with bristles along its edge to thoroughly clean the Walls of the stove-flue and sweep out the accumulated deposits, as hereinafter more fully described.

Figure 1 is an edge or side view of the device shown in full lines in the position in which it is inserted into the stove and showing in dotted lines the position in which it is effectively worked as a scraper or brush, and Fig. 2,is a plan or side View taken at right angles to the view shown in Fig. l.

In the drawings? A represents the main stem or handle-rod, Whose outer end is bent three times at right angles to form the members a b c, of which c forms the axis of a brush-head B, which hasperforated ears d cl embracing the said axis. The axis of this brush is at right angles to the main stem,and the brush is adjustable thereabout from a plane nearly parallel to the stem, as shown in full lines in Fig. l, to a plane at right angles, as shown in dotted lines. This brush has along both edges bristles e and e', those on one edge e being longer than the other to give different degrees of stiffness to be used according to the nature of the material to be removed.

To one side of the brush, at a little distance from its axial center, is attached an eye f, into A which is loosely secured an eye f on a slide- Serial No. 603,405. (No model.)

rod O, which is bent `into two wraps or convolutions g g around the main stem, so as to guide it as it slid-es thereon. The inner end of the slide-rod is bent into a finger-loop 72 into which is inserted the foreiinger of the hand, which grasps the main stem, so that the slide-rod may be drawn back to turn and hold the brush-head in a right-angular position. A spiral spring a' is wound about the main stem between the wrap g' and the end of the spiral handheld j, so as to restore the brushhead to the flat position which it normally occupies in being inserted through the cleanout slot of the stove.

Vhen used as a scraper, the brush is turned to its right-angular position and the ed ge with the short bristles is used as a hoe or scraper, and when used as a brush the longer and more elastic set of bristles are used by moving the whole device back and forth while the brush-head is held in its right-angular position by the foreiinger.

The end or handle portion of the main stem, as shown, is wrapped with Wire to give a better grasp, but this may be left plain or be provided with a wooden handle, if desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A stove-cleaner comprising a main stem bearing at its outer end an axis at right angles; in combination with a cleaner-head hinged upon said axis, a slide-rod extended down beside and guided on the main stem and connected to the cleaner-head for turning it, and a spring for holding said head in a fiat or approximately parallel position with reference to the main stem substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of the main stem having its end bentat right'angles, a doubleedged brush-head hinged about its middle to said right-angular portion of the main stem, a slide-rod loosely connected to said head, Wound about the main stem to form guidecoils, and terminating in a finger-loop, and a spiral spring Wound about the main stem and bearing against one of said guide-coils to hold the brush-head fiatwise'to the main stem substantially as and for the purpose described.
