SWAB-HOLDER.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented Apr. 17, 1917.
Application filed June 7, 1915. Serial No. 32,678.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER D. NARAMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Swab-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a swab holder and more particularly to a swab holder in which the swab thereon may be used to remove accumulated material from dentures, such as bridge work, and the like, and especially material which has accumulated between the denture and the gums.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a swab holder in which a shank on the handle of the holder terminates in a hollow head receiving a portion of a swab carrying member frictionally retained within said head in such a manner that although the swab carrying member is prevented from becoming accidentally detached from the head while the swab is in use, the swab carrying member may be turned therein to insure the proper cleaning of the denture and the grooves between the same and the gums.
Another object of the invention is to provide the swab holder with a swab carrying member which is flattened and tapered for a portion of its length with the flattened and tapered portion thereof provided with longitudinally extending slots converging toward one end of the flattened and tapered portion to enable cleaning material to be easily and securely connected with the swab carrying member.
A further object of the invention is to provide the swab holder with a head which is slotted both longitudinally and transversely to enable the swab carrying member to be easily and quickly inserted therein.
With these and other objects in view, the invention. resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts,- which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred embodiment of the inven-' tion has been illustrated in the accompany-v ing drawing, although no restriction isnecessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications, within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing, in which:
Figure l. is a view in elevation of a swab holder constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the shank of the swab holder.
Fig. 3 is a view of one end modified form of swab holder.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal transverse sectional View on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the swab carrying member shown in Fig. 3 in the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 10 designates the handle of the swab holder which has connected with one end thereof, the end of a shank 11, said shank having an offset portion 12 between its ends spacing the other end 12 of the shank from the longitudinal center line of of a slightly the handle 10.
The end 12 of the shank 11 has formed integral therewith a hollow cylindrical head 13 extending from the end 12 of the shank at an acute angle toward the longitudinal center line of the handle and terminating in spaced relation thereto with the free end of the head open, said head having'formed in its peripheral wall a longitudinally extending slot 13.
' A swab carrying member 14 is received for a portion of its length in the head 13 and has connected therewith a swab 15 which in Fig. l of the drawing has been shown as bristles.
By slotting the head 13 longitudinally, it will be seen that the swab carrying member 14: may be easily inserted within the head 13 and frictionally held therein against casual displacement when the holder is in use and that the swab carrying member may be turned within the head 13 to enable the swab to thoroughly clean any deposits which have accumulated between the denture and the gums covering the roots of the teeth to which the denture has been applied.
Referring now to the modified form of swab shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 in the drawing, it will be seen that the head 16 on the shank 12 has formed in its peripheral wall a longitudinally extending slot 17 intersect ed between its ends by a transversely extending slot 17 which renders the peripheral wall of the head 16 more flexible to enable the swab carrying member to be more easily inserted therein.
A swab carrying member 18 which may be used in connection with either the head 13 or 16 and for which the swab carrying member shown in Fig. 1 in the .drawing may be substituted is formed from a cylindrical rod of metal flattened upon opposite sides for substantially half of its length to provide the swab carrying member with a stem 19 for insertion in the head 13 or 16 and a tapered head 20 for connection with a swab.
The head 20 is provided at one end with spaced and longitudinally extending slots 21 inclining toward the stem 19 and each having an end opening out through an end in the head 20.
Arranged between the inclined slots 21 is a slot 22 extending longitudinally of the head 20 and of less length than the slots 21, said slot 22 also having an end opening out through an end on the head 20.
Through the above described arrangement of the slots 21 and 22 in the head 20 of the swab carrying member 18, it will at once be apparent that a piece of cleaning material 23 such as absorbent cotton, or the like, may be quickly and easily connected with the swab carrying member 18 and in such a manner that the piece of cleaning material will be prevented from casual displacement from the swab holder while the same is in use.
When it is desired to use the swab holder, the stem 19 of the swab carrying member 18 is inserted in the head 13 on the shank 11 and a piece ofcleaning material such as absorbent cotton, or the like, twisted about the head 20 and retained thereon by the slots 21 and 22.
The handle of the swab holder may be held in the hand and the head 13 on the shank 11 inserted in the mouth and the cleaning material on the head 20 brought in contact with the denture by moving the handle backwardly and forwardly, the accumulated material on the denture may be removed therefrom.
In order that the material which is accumulated between the denture and the gums or between the denture and the adjacent teeth, the swab carrying member may'be Copies of this patent may be obtained for turned in the head on the shank so that the edge thereof within the cleaning material will lie in the same plane as the crease between the denture and the gums or the denture and the teeth.
The swab holder may be manipulated to force the cleaning material intothese crevices so that the accumulated matter therein may be removed in a satisfactory manner.
From the foregoing statements, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is at once apparent that a swab holder has been provided which is so constructed that when the swab connected therewith is used to remove accumulated deposits on dentures, such as bridges, or the like, all parts of the denture may be thoroughly cleaned especially the groove between the top of the denture and the gum covering the teeth to which the denture is applied.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. In a swab holder, the combination with a handle having a shank, of a head on said shank, and a swab carrying member carried by said head and provided with a tapered and slotted portion for connection with a swab.
2. In a swab holder, the combination with a handle having a shank, of a hollow cylindrical head on said shank having in its peripheral wall a longitudinally extending slot and a transversely extending slot intersecting said longitudinally extending slot between its ends, a swab carrying member having a stem received within said head, and a flattened and tapered portion below said stem for connection with a swab.
3. In a swab holder, the combination with a handle having a shank, of a head on said shank, a swab carrying member having a stem received in said head, and a flattened and tapered portion on said swab carrying member having slots therein inclining toward said stem to receive therein portions of a swab.
In testimony whereof I afliX-my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER D. NARAMORE.
