TRUMAN WM. JONES, OF GOATESVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA DENTAL nnavnnnoncrr.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1921.
Application filed Iune 17, 1920. Serial No. 389,542.
(.loatesville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Nerve-Breaches, of which the following is a specification.
Dentists often find it difficult to manipulate nerve breaches during the action of withdrawing a nerve from the nerve cavity of a tooth in view of the fact that the saliva from the patients mouth often coats the finger-engaging portlon of the broach and thereby renders it slippery and in view of the necessary smallness of these broaches they very often slip or do not respond to the twisting or moving action of thedentist for the reason that the dentist cannot secure suiiicient finger grip upon the broach to enable him to manipulate it in a positive and desired manner.
One ob'ect of m r invention is to irovide a nerve broach which will insure a positive and secure finger grip when being used.
Another object is to so make my improved nerve broach that the finger gripping handle can be produced by the bending of the wire from which the main or stem portion is constructed without greatly adding to the weight of the broach.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I
line 5-5 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of my -im-' proved nerve broach.
Referring to the drawings, my improved nerve broach can be made from a single piece of wire and tapered at one end and I provided with barbs 7 in the usual manner. The opposite end of the wire is bent downwardly to provide a portion 8 which is spaced from the main stem 9 and this portion 8 is bent at 10 to provide an upwardly projectingextension'l1; the extreme end 12 or said extension being preferably arranged substantially at the same level with the bowed top 13 which is produced when making the portion 8. The bend 10 is made preferably in a plane at an angle to the plane of bend of the part 13 and a handle 14 is thus produced which permits a part of the fingers to project into the spaces between the stem 9 and portion 8 and between the porti0n'8 and the extension 11; thus insuring a secure finger purchase by the dentist while using the broach.
The construction ofmy improved broach as above described is such that during use a portion of the skin or flesh of the dentists fingers will enter or bulge into the longi tudinal spaces between the longitudinal bent portions of the handle and thereby provide a sure grip for the fingers and guard against accidental slipping of the broach during its required turning action when removing a nerve from the nerve cavity of a tooth. Furthermore by constructing the handle as above specified a twisting action thereo'fwill impart a slight eccentric action of the barbed main stem 9 and thereby serve to clean the wall of the nerve cavity of a tooth and to remove any part of the nerve which is positioned out of the central part of the cavity.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but
[consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A nerve broach made of wire and including an end portion forming a main stem, the opposite end of said wire being bent downward in substantially parallel spaced relation to said stem and then bent upwardly to provide an extension in spaced relation to said stem and firstmentioned spaced portion to insure a good finger gripping portion which when turned imparts a slight eccentric movement to said stem; sub stantially as described.
2. A nerve broach made of wire and ineluding an end portion forming a main stem, the opposite end of said wire being bent downward in spaced relation to said stem and then bent upwardly to provide an extension in spaced relation to said stem and first mentioned spaced portion, said stem and first mentioned spaced portion being in a plane extending at an angle to the plane including said first mentioned por- 10 tion and said extension to insure a good finger gripping portion which when turned imparts a slight eccentric movement to said stem; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 15 two subscribing witnesses.
