Description

J. A. J. HASLOP. DEVICE FOR CLEANING 0R TBUING ELECTRIC CONTAGTS.

DEVICE FOR CLEANING OR TRUING ELECTRIC CONTACTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 11, 1908.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Serial No. i52,6 3.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Annnnws J ones HAsLOP, residing at 38 Upper street, Islington, London, N., England, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleaning or Truing Electric Contacts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention for a device for cleaning or truing electric contacts has for its object to provide a small apparatus by means of which the points of contact that alternately make and break an electric circuit can be readily and truly cleaned and is specially applicable to the contacts of the coils of motor vehicles and consists in a device provided with means for guiding and having a circular file or roughened surface that can be pushed against the contact and rotated to truly clean it.
In one way of carrying out this invention as applied to a contact cleaner for motor coils, a spindle having a roughened end is mounted to rotate and slide in a casing provided with a grip or handle and has an op erating handle outside. The spindle is of such size that it will pass through the bridge piece in which is mounted the adjusting piece carrying one of the contacts so that it can readily be brought to bear on the con tact on the spring blade. The casing is provided with a sliding sheath that is slid forward and forms a guide when cleaning up the contact on the screw and also for clean ing up the contact on a loose plate.
If it is not desired to clean the contact on the blade in site the roughened surface may be a disk file 011 the end of a spindle adapted to be rotated and slide endwise in a casing that itself forms the guide for the blade or screw. If desired a small roughened surface may be fitted on one end and a larger disk surface on the other end of the spindle.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood reference may be made to the accompanying sheet of drawings in Figure 1 is an outside elevation of an apparatus constructed according to this inven tion. Fig. 2 is a section thereof with the operating handle removed. Figs. 3 and 4 are end elevations showing the roughened or serrated faces at each end.
The spindle a which is provided with two roughened surfaces at a one at each end is mounted to rotate and slide in a casing or guide 5 provided with a grip or handle I). The casing is bored or recessed out at b so as to form a sheath or guide for the enlarged. roughened end a of the spindle a when this end is being employed as for instance when cleaning a contact on a loose plate.
An operating handle or cap of is arranged to slide tightly over the end a of the spindle a and this serves for rotating the spindle a when the end a is being employed to clean up a contact. When it is desired to use the small surface a the cap a is removed when the spindle a can be reversed or not as desired in the holder 6 and the enlarged end a serves as an operating handle.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device for cleaning or truing electrical contacts which comprises a sleeve having an aperture running therethrough, reduced at one end, a spindle reversibly mounted in said sleeve and having roughened ends, one of which is enlarged and constitutes a handle, a handle integral with the sleeve, and a removable handle frictionally engaged. with the reduced end of said spindle and adapted to cover its roughened portion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
