Description

FFIcjE.
PATENT BEVERLY L. BENSON, )F FAIIVIEV, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIFTING BUGGY-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Pa-tent'No. 116,540, dated J uly 4, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BEVERLY L. BENSON, of Fairview, in the county ot Fayette and State ot' Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shii'tin g Buggy-Top; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature oi' my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a shitting buggy-top, as will be hereinafter more fullyv set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in whichg Figure I is a perspective view ofthe buggy-seat and rail, and Fi g. 2 is a view ot" the rear fastening.
A represents the buggv-seat, provided at each front corner with a curved iron, l, forming the hand-hold. At the top of the seat, in each ot' the hand-holds B, is an oriiiee for the insertion of a hook, a., at the front end ofthe rail C. The hooks'a a extend toward the rear from. the lower ends of the upright bars I) a-t the end ot the rail, and are inserted troni the front in the orices in the hand-holds, the points or ends of said hooks being curved slightly downward. The rail C forms a curve corresponding with the curve of the seat, and is, at each rear corner, provided with an arm, I). Each ot' the arms l.) extends the.
proper distance outward to receive the top joint, the other end of the arm extending inward and downward to the bottom ofthe seat, and the extreme end is .iiattened and provided with an elongated slot to receive the head etl the swivel-bolt (lv, which constitutes the rear i'rstening. The swivel-bolt consists of a T- headV on top and swivel-head on the bottom, and passes through a metal plate, f, having a rise or projeetiom'e, that fills the slot in the a-rm I) when the top is adjusted with the T-head restin across the slot in the arm. The bars I; b in front extend upward a suitable distance above the rail C, and their upper ends bent outward at right angles to receive the bow-irons and arm-rest, which are tastened by a tap on the end. The arm-rests E E and back Gr are constructed in the usual way, and attached. to the rail C. i l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is#- 1. The arms D I), having their outer ends of suitable length to reeei ve the top joint, and their inner ends slotted and fastened to the seat by means ot the swivel-bolt rl, plate f, and projection c, subst-antiall)v as herein set forth.
2. The rail C provided with the upright bars b b, hooks a a, a-nd the arms l) I), all constructed and arranged substantially as and Jfor the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the tbregoing as my own I aiiix my signz'liture in presence ot' two witnesses.
B. L. BENSON.
