Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOEL N. WHIPPLE, OF VOLGA CITY, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,752, dated August 2S, 1877; application tiled July 30, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, d. N. WHIPPLE, of' Volga City, in the county of Clayton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage-Tops; and I do hereby declare'that the following is a clear, full, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part oi' this specification.
My invention relates to an improved device for supporting carriage-tops in any requiredposition, and also in a device for holding the curtains in position.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is an elevation, showing the device for supporting the top. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing 4the manner of securing the curtains, and Fig.4isaperspective view ot' the handle for detaching the support.
The same letters are employed in all theigures in the indication ot' the same parts.
A is a buggy-seat, to which is attached a segment, B, having a segmental rack, B1, and a flange, B2, leaving between them a recess to receive the spring-detentDD2 of lever D. The lever is attached` so as to stand between the second and third bows of the top C. The de tent terminates in a spring, D1, which tends to force the pointl)2 between the notches of the rack B1. By drawing on the lever the point is detached and the top may be raised or lowered. When the lever is released the spring will cause the point to catch into the rack and sup port the top in any desired position. The detent is pivoted to one of the bows.
E isabentrod inserted in the bottom of each of the sidecurtains, the curvature oi' the rods being that designed for the curtains. The points ot' the rods projecting beyclnd the curtains may be inserted in the ends of the tubular brace F inthe back curtain, thus holding it down; or they may be detached, so as to permit the curtains to be raised.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the bows and seat of a carriage, the arch B,having a segmental rack, B1, and iiange B2, between which the detent with spring D1 and point D2 is placed, and lever D foractuating the detent, substantially as set forth.
2. rlhe side curtains containing side rods E E, bent to conform to the shape ot' the curtains, and-having projecting4 points, in combination with the back curtain, with tubular rod F for securing the curtains, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOEL N. WHIPPLE.
