Description

V W. M. DEMAREST.
Umbrella-Holder for Vehicles.
No, 222,875. Patented Dec. 23, 18 79 g l ll mmy iilhm WITNESSES @(M ATTORNEY N2 PFI'ERS, PMOTO LITHOGRAPH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALDEN M. DEMAREST, OF WAVERLY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA -HOLDERS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,875, dated December 23, 1879; application filed November 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALDEN M. DEMA- REST, of the village of Waverly, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Umbrella-Holders for Wagons, Buggy-Seats, &c. and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawingsis arepresentation of a perspective view of my umbrella-holder for vehicles; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are sectional details of the joints.
This invention has relation to means for holding the umbrella over wagon or buggy seats; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the seat or seat-rail clamp, the pivoted adjustable arm bearing on the upper plate thereof, and having a semicircular slot in its end extension, the pivoted clamp-bearing for the umbrella-stick and the short pivoted joint-connection seated between the end bearings of the horizontal arm, and
having a vertical semicircularly-slotted flange at its outer end, to which the stick-bearing is pivoted, all as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A. designates the main body of the rail-clamp,
having a horizontal upper flange, a, at the edge of which are depending clainphooks b, below which are attached to the lower edge of the body-plate the removable under hooks, c, by clamp-screws d.
B indicates the main horizontal arm or sweep, having a long vertical journal, 0, extending through a tubular bearing in the body-plate, and secured therein by means of a clampscrew, 01'. At the upper end of the journal 0 the arm is provided with a circular bearing or flange, f, having at regular distances around its outer portions indentations g to engage with the pointed stud h of the bearing-flange a of the rail-clamp, according to the horizontal adjustment of the arm required. This arm B is usually made sufficiently broad vertically to prevent bending or breaking, and is provided at its outer end with bearings k k, one
vertically over the other, between which is vertically pivoted the inner end of the short horizontal joint 0. t
The upper hearing, it, is made in semicircular form, and is providedQwith a semicircular slot, 1, through which passes a clamp-screw, d intoan under lug, 42, extending from the inner end of the joint 0. At the outer end of said joint a similar semicircular bearing, t, is arranged in vertical position, depending in the form of a flange from the joint end, and is also provided with a semicircular slot, 1, through which passes a clamp-screw, d into alug, 10, extending from the lower end of the stickholder D, which is pivoted to the end of the joint (3 and bears against its flange. This holder or arm extends upward, and is made with concave bearings r for the stick E, which is secured by means of one or more clamping links or hands, as shown at G.
It will be observed that the bearings of the short-joint main arm and body-clamp are arranged so as to sustain the weight of the umbrella in an excellent manner, and that the parts of this holding attachment are easily adjusted to give the umbrella-stick anydesired inclination and almost any position, as the main rail or seat clamp can be attached horizontally or vertically, the horizontal position being the strongest.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The umbrella attachment consisting of the main clamp A, its clamp-hooks b c, and bearin g-fian ge a, having the stop-stud h, the sweep B, having the indented bearing f, journal e, lower-end bearing 70, and upper slotted end bearing 70, the joint 0, pivoted between the latter bearings, and having the vertical slotted bearing-flange t at its outer end, the stickholder I) pivoted to said joint, and the clampscrews (1, 01, 01 and (1 substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WALDEN M. DEMAREST,
Witnesses:
J. NEWTON DEXTER, FREDERICK GREEN.
