HENRY C. LOEVENHART, OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO JACOB I-I. LOEVENI-IART, OF
SAME PLACE.
BEDSTEAD ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 51 1,340, dated December 26, 1893.
Application ledMaroh 16,1893. Serial No. 466,317. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, HENRY C. LOEVENHAET, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled ro in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
My invention relates to improvements in swinging vbrackets adapted lo be pivoted to the end boards of a bedstead, for holding or supporting a chamber` or spittoon; the construction and arrangement being such that the chamber or spittoon can be pushed unzo derneath the bed, out of sight, when not in use, and be readily swung outwardly, clear of the side-rails, when it is desired to use the same.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure lis a side View of a bedstead with my improved bracket applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail 3o perspective view.
Like numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in both figures.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral l designates the end boards, 2 the side rails,
3 5 and 3 the slats of a bedstead, which may be 4of any ordinary or usual construction. The bracket, which is preferably made of cast metal, comprises a straight bar or rod 4, having one end formed with a short downwardly 4o extending stud, 5, which is journaled or pivoted in lugs 6, secured to either or both of the end boards near the lower inner edges thereof; an outwardly extending segmental arm 7, having its end formed with a finger-hold 8, and
a short downwardly extending arm 9, with which is formed or connected a spittoon or chamber-holder, 10 or 12.
through and engages with a recess 13, in a bar 14, secured to the side railin the inner side 5o thereof.
The spittoon holder consists of an annular The arm 7 passes v ring or rini, of a size sufficient to allow the body of an ordinary spittoon or cuspidor, 15, to pass therethrough, but not large enough for the passage of the Haring mouth or upper end thereof, whereby the cuspidor will be held by said flaring end engaging with the ring or rim, as seen in Fig. l.
The chamber holder consists of a cup shaped receptacle, cut away at 16, and also having a central openingin its bottom for the purpose of reducing weight. Its upper edge is formed with a recess 17 to receive the handle 18, of a chamber 19, which is shown inserted into the holder, in the side elevation Fig. 1.
In practice, I prefer to employ a spittoon holder at one end of the bedstead and a chamber holder at the other end, although both the spittoon-holder and the chamber-holder may be connected with either of the end-boards.
The operation will be readily understood. When it is desired to usethe spittoon or chamber, the bracket is pulled out by means ofthe finger hold 8, the segmental arm 7 sliding upon the reduced or recessed portion of the bar 14, and the spittoon or chamber swung clear of the bed. It will be noted that the weight of the bracket is supported by the arm 7 and the bar 14, thus taking the greater part of the strain off the pivot. The said ngerhold acts also as a stop to limit the inward movement of the bracket by striking against bar 14.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with a bedstead, of the bracket comprising the bar pivoted to the end board, the segmental arm having a lingerhold, the short downwardly projecting arm and the cup shaped chamber holder having a recess in its edge, and the slotted barsecured to the side rail with which the segmental arm engages, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aihxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY C. LOEVENHART.
