HOLDER FOR TUBULAR LANTERNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535.543, dated March 12, 1895.
Application filed October 30, 1893. Serial No. 489,438- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY LEAVITT, a citizen of theUnited States, residing atYarmouth, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Tubular Lanterns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to adevice for suspending tubular lanterns to carriages or other vehicles and the object of the invention is to construct a holder which may be attached to the under side of the carriage body and which will hold the lantern firmly while the carriage is in motion and at the same time allow it to be quickly placed in position and removed therefrom. I accomplish this object by means of the device which is the subject of the present invention and which Iwill hereinafter fully describe.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a holder constructed according to my invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a carriage body to the under side of which my holder is attached; and Fig. 2, is a perspective View of the holder with a tubular lantern in position, the upper part of the lantern alone being shown.
A represents a carriage body to the under side of which is fastened the holder. This latter consists of a support or bracket 0 bolted to the under side of the carriage by a suitable bolt d.
The bracket I prefer to make of a single piece of sheet metal the upper end of which is bent or folded over a block D by which it is secured to the carriage.
The lower end of the bracket is cut and bent to form two hooks c c which are adapted to hook under the tube of the lantern where it extends across the top and the portion between the two hooks is extended down to form a projection c which serves as a rest for the draft tube of the lantern and to prevent the lantern from oscillating. The inner surfaces of the hooks 0 care lined with leather or other suitable material e e to prevent wear on the tube of the lantern. This device may be made of any desired length according to the height of the vehicle to which it is to be attached.
The lantern as will be seen maybe readily hooked and unhooked from this holder and the projection c effectually prevents any ostwo outside ones being turned up to form hooks to receive the tube of the lantern, and
the middle one extending downward to furnish a bearing for the draft tube.
