IMPROVED RElN-HOLDER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 98,246, dated December 28, 1869 antedated December 17, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JOHN GIBSON, Jr., of the city and county of Albany, in-the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction and Arrangement of Rein Holders, whereby a cheap, handy, and efficient means is afforded to hold the driving-reins of horses in theintervals of stoppage from travel and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a whip-holder with improvement. Fig. 2 representsthe improvement in connection with a whip-socket, Fig. 3 represents the improvement in connection with a whip-holder of another style of base. Fig. 4 is a vertical view from above of awhip-holder with improvement. Fig. 5 is a vertical view of the improvement attached to a whip-socket fastener.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a short metal stein, placed off at a little distance from the body of the whipholder or whip-socket. The said stein may be attached permanently to such whip-socket or whip-holder, or to a fastening of either of the same. A
The reins (which have heretofore been knotted or buckled, and thrown over or around the dash when the traveler wished to alight) are, with this improvement, readily secured by looping the said reins at a suitable distance from their end, and casting the said loop over or around the rein-holding stem, which will hold the reins secure until removed by design.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it in reference to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, the same letters indicating like parts.
A, Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, represents a whipholder or whip-socket, attached to a dash-iron, B, Figs. 1 and 2, or dash, Fig. 4, by means of the fasteners O, a stem, S, made a part of or attached to one part of the said fasteners 0, around which said stem the driving-reins B may be looped during intervals of stopping when driving.
The said stem S may be attached to the base of the whip-holder A, Figs. 3 and 4, be-
tween the said whip-holder and the dash of the carriage, and may rise up vertically, or may be inclined downward, as shown by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, or may be placed in a horizontal position, or at any angle desired, and may be either hooked or straight, as dotted lines, Figs. 4 and 5, ormay be of any other equivalent form, or in-any-other equivalent position, whereby the reins B may be securely held to the whip-holder or whipsocke-t, or to a fastening thereof,as Fig. 5, and in all cases directly connected with the whip-holder A, as in Figs. 3 and 4, or connected with a whip-holder fastening, Fig. 1, or with the fastening of a whip-socket, as in Figs. 2 and 5.
The said stem S may, if desired, be attached to the upper fastening C of the whipholder or whip-socket A, and may also be of any form and in any position, as before described.
The manner of operating with this invention is to loop the driving-reins R, in the manner shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5, and place said loop over or around the stem S, which will thus hold the reins securely when not in use.
Having described my invention, I do not claim a stem for holding reins, when such stem is attached to or made with the body of a whip-socket, as that has been done; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a whip-holder or whip-socket, A, the stem S, as described, or its equivalent, made with or attached to a fastening, G or G. of the said Whip-holder or whip-socket A, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The stem S, as described, or its equivalent, in combination with a fastening, O or G, for a whip-socket, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The driving-reins R and stem S, or its equivalent, in combination with a fastening,
O or O, of a whip-holder or ,whip-socket, by
means of which the reins can be held, substantially in the manner set forth and described.
