Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT Orrroa PAYSON HrMINER, OF ROME, NEW YORK.
IMP'RovEMENT'IN HAT-HoLDERs.
g Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,488, dated January 23, 1877; application filed December 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAYsoN. HUNGERFORD MINER, of Rome, in the county ofOneida and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Hook, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents my improved hat-hook applied to the underside of a seat. Fig. 2 is l another view of the same, showing the hat in which it is turned, and to which a spring is attached for holding it in place under the seat, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, A is a rod of any Asuitable metal, which is provided with an eye, a, at the upper end `of the. vertical portion b, and is formed into a loop at c for receiving the end of the coil-spring d. l Y From the loop c the rod runs 'at right angles with the arm b for a short distance, and is formed into a coil, e, through which a screw, f, passes into the under surface of the seat B.
From the upper end of the coil e the rod extends downward to a point, g, near the floor,
where it is bent at right angles, and extends to h, where an eye is formed, and from thence toj, where it is bent upward and formed into an inverted conical spiral, la, terminating in a ring, l, at the top.
The spring d, which engages the loop c, is attached to the bottom of the seat, and draws the spiral la under the seat.
To place a hat upon thehook the eye a is drawn outward, bringing the spiral k from beneath the seat when the hat is placed upon it, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the hook is allowed to take its normal posi; tion underneath the seat. The hat, by means of this simple and inexpensive contrivance, is supported Where it receives no injury, and where it is out of the way of the feet.
A soft hat or cap may be thrown into the spiral, and other articles, such as gloves, scarfs, &c., may also be placed in it.v
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A hat hook or support, consisting of a rod bent into aspiral, k, for supporting the hat, and bent upward,`and formed into a coil, e, for receiving a Vscrew for attaching it to the seat, and provided with an arm, b, for moving it, and a' spring, d, for returning itto its normal position, substantially as herein shown and described.
BAYSON HUNGERFORD MINER.
