IMPROVEMENT IN CLEANERS FOR JUGS, &c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,297, dated April 18, 1876; application filed March 6, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAURA GoTT, of La... Grange, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaners for Jugs, 850.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in jug-cleaners, and applicable also for cleaning bottles, lamp-chimneys, 850.

My invention consists in the combination of devices and appliances as hereinafter set forth and claimed.

A is a stem or handle. ating upon that handle. the slot 1), through which projects the stud a, that limits the motion of the sleeve B upon the handle A. 0 is a cap attached to the end of the arm A. D are arms, to which are attached sponges or cleaners of any kind, E. The arms D project, respectively, from the caps G and from the sleeve B. F is a brace that, projecting from the sleeve B, is connected with the swinging-arm D that is attached to thecap 0. That brace F which projects from the cap 0 is attached in like manner to the arm D that swings from the sleeve B. The fastenings of the arms D and F to each other and to the sleeveB and cap 0 are all flexible, so as to admit of a free motion. It is therefore apparent that as the sleeve B is slid up on the handle A the arms D will be spread apart, and the reverse motion of the sleeve B will bring the arms D more nearly together. The arms D are provided with sliding bars or arms D to which the wipers or cleaners are directly attached. By sliding these arms D out, the arms D are lengthened, and vice versa. They may be secured in any place by means of a nut, D or any other equivalent device, or they may be slid with sufficient view of my B is a sleeve oper- It is provided with friction that they will need no particular fast-- ening.

The operation of the device is as follows: Sponges or other cleaners are attached in any suitable manner as, for instance, by clamping-nuts D upon the ends of the arms D D They are then wet, and while the sleeve B is well down on the handle the contrivance is inserted into the mouth of the jug, bottle, or chimney. When once inside, the sleeve B is slid up on the handle A until the cleaners E are brought against the surface to be cleaned.

It will be observed that one of them will clean the bottom of the jug, while the other will clean the top. By turning the handle the sponges are then caused to wash the surface of the interior of thejng or bottle.

Gris an independent arm bearing an independent sponge. It is designed merely as an attachment to a cleaner, so that the single cleaner may be adapted to all kinds of work. The independent arm G is used or designed for use simply as a cleaner for small bottles or devices, into which the other cannot be inserted.

I have, therefore, in this device a cleaner which may be used for cleaning jugs, bottles, vials, or lamp-chimneys, or anything of a similar nature.

I do not limit myself to the particular method by which the arms are attached to the sleeve B or to the cap 0, nor to the particular means shown for extending or shortening the arms D, as any suitable means may be employed, or the sponges may be attached directly to the arms D, without the interposition of the sliding arms D So also any other fastening than the ends D may be employed for securing the sponges or cleaners.

What I claim is 1. In combination with the expanding arms D, the extension rods or slides D for increasin g the scope of the cleaners, substantially as and for the purpose shown.

2. The combination, with the jug-cleaner herein described, of the independentswinging arm G, provided with the sponge or cleaner E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
