Description
(No Modem M. J. GUTHRIE. CLEANER.
No. 581,581. Patented Apr. 27, 1897.
NirE STATES TATET OFFICE.
MARTHA J. GUTHRIE, OF VICHITA, KANSAS.
CLEANER.
' SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,581, dated April 27, 1897'.
Application filed May 16, 1896. Serial No. 591,858. (No model.)
To all '1o-71.0112. it may concern;-
Be it known that I, MARTHA J. GUTHRIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at IViChita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for cleaning windows and transoms, and for various other and similar purposes, such as ceilings, walls, high furniture, floors, and the like; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple, light, cheap, and durable and eiiicient cleaner by which windows can be readily cleaned without leaning out of the window and uponV the inside without removing the screens.
I form the body portion of the cleaner of light yet sufficiently strong wire and render it adjust-able, so that it may be as conveniently used for furniture or other objects that are near the floor as those at a height. It is capable of closing into small compass, so as to be readily sent through the mails or to occupy but a minimum space when not in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specilically defined by the appended claims.
The invention resides in the peculiar construction and the combinations, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a view showing the manner of use of the cleaner as a window -cleanen Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the handle.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the bar or holder for the cleaning-cloth removed.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the body portion of the device, which is composed of two pieces of wire of sutlicient size to give the required strength and rigidity. One of these pieces is bent at its center to forni the loop a', and thence bent outward and thence upward to form the parallel arms or portions a3, which terminate in the loops or eyes l5, as shown. The other wire C is bent at its center to forni the cross portion l), and at its ends to form the loops b', through which the parallel portions or arms a3 are received and through which they are designed to freely slide.
D is the bar or holder, which isdesigned to receive the cloth E, and it has at the ends the pintles or pins F, which are designed to be detachably received in the eyes or loops B of the one part of the handle or body portion of the device, as shown.
When desired, a suitable brace G maybe employed for holding the outer ends of the one part against separation, so as to prevent wabbling of the holder. This brace may be adjustable, as seen in Fig. 2.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
NVhat is claimed as new is* l. The combination with the handle formed with ad justably-connectcd sections each having parallel arms, one of which sections has loops, of a holder having pintles held in said loops and a brace for the parallel arms of one of the sections, as set forth.
2. The combination with the handle formed with ad justably-connected sections each hav. ing parallel arms, one of which sections has MARTHA J. GUTH'RIE.
lVit-nesses:
CARRIE MAY FLETCHER, CORDELIA V. JEWELL.
