Description

No. 639,728. Patented Dec. 26, I899. S. HILLWIG.
GARMENT STRETCHER.
(Application filed Mar. 23,1899.)
(No Model.)
WITNESSES:
' I O I Arm/"15x3 SAMUEL HILLWIG, OF RANKIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARMENT-STRETCHER.
" SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,728, dated December 26, 1899.
Serial No. 710,206. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HILLWIG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rankin, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Stretchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in garment-stretchers.
The object of my invention is to construct a device of this character which is adapted for the stretching of garments, trousers, &c.
A further object of my invention is to construct a device of this character with means for locking the same in the position desired when inserted in the garments or trousers.
A further object of my invention is to construct a device of this character which is collapsible, which allows for its use for various sizes of garments or trousers.
My invention finally consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corre-. sponding parts throughout the several views thereof, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig.2 is a side view thereof, showing the same in a collapsible position. Fig. 3 is a side view of a pair of pivoted arms. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lockingclasp.
Referring to the drawings by referencenumerals, 1 and 2 indicate elongated oblong pieces of suitable metallic material of a desired length bent upon themselves, as shown, forming a substantial U shape in section, these pieces forming sides of myimproved device. Pivotally connected to thesides 1 and 2, as at 3, are the arms or braces45. These arms are pivotally connected to a supportingrod 6, as at 7, so that when they are extended they are in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and when folded enter the sides, forming a compact package. These arms graduate in size from the top to the bottom of the sides, as sh0wn-tl1at is, smaller toward the bottom.
The supporting-rod 6 is of greater length than the sides and extends outwardly from the bottom thereof. This outwardly-extending part of the supporting-rod has a handle 8 suitably secured thereto, and it is also provided with a series of notches 9.
Below the lower arms 4 5 the sides have pivotally secured thereto, as at 10, the operat= ing-levers 11 12, which are pivotally connected to a securing-clasp 13. This clasp 13 operates over the supporting-rod 6 and is adapted to be caught in the fastening-notches 9 for securing the stretcher in the desired position when extended.
The securing-clasp is formed of an oblong frame having an extension or lug 14 formed integral therewith, which is apertured, as at 15, to allow of pivotally securing the inner ends of the operating-levers thereto. This frame is also provided with apertures 16 17 to allow of its being mounted upon the supporting-rod.
It will be observed that the construction herein set forth forms a collapsible skeleton frame which can be extended to the position desired and locked by means of a securingclasp.
It is thought that the operation of my improved garment-stretcher can be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, as well as the many advantages it possesses.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A garment-stretcher consisting of a pair of elongated strips of suitable metallic material bent upon themselves forming the sides thereof, a supporting-rod, a graduated series of pairs of arms pivotally secured at their one end within the sides and at the opposite end to one face of the said rod, the said rod adapted to enter the said sides lengthwise when the stretcher is collapsed, a handle formed integral with the lower end of the said supporting-rod, the said rod above the said handle porting-arms are extended and to be disenprovided with a series of fastening-notches, gaged from the notches when the stretcher is an oblong frame mounted on the said rod, an collapsed, substantially as described.
