UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT G. FORSYTH,-OF OAKLAND, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-CHIMNEY CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,670, dated April 8, 1873; application filed February 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Row. G. FoRsYrH, 0 Oakland, in the county of Goles and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Lamp-Chimney Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the same.
This invention has relation to means for cleaning lamp-chimneys; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a number of elastic wire arms attached to the end of a rod or handle, and extended radially outward and backward toward said rod' or handle. The object of this invention is to provide an instrument with elastic or springing arms, which can readily be forced, when enveloped in the wiping cloth or paper, into any lamp-chimney, whether of large or small size, Without danger of tearing through the cloth or breaking the springs, and in order to accomplish the result the springing arms are so arranged and attached to the end of the rod or handle that they are, as it were, drawn after it into the chimney.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A indicates the rod or handle, made preferably hexagonal or of some prismatic form, in order that it may be readily turned in the chimney. B 13 indicate the springing arms. These are stout elastic wires, each of which has one of its ends driven into the central portion of that end of the rod A which is to be introduced into the chimney. In order to prevent spreading these ends of the wires are passed through perforations in a small plate, a, of metal, which is attached to the end of the rod. The portion of each wire which is next to the end which has been driven into the rod is coiled once upon itself, as shown at b, after which the free end 0 of the wire is extended outward and backward in a curved form, as illustrated in the drawing, the extremity being turned toward the handle. The coils b are firmly secured to the plate a by means of solder or otherwise, making the end of the instrument very strong and substantial. 0 indicates a metallic band, which is secured around the rod A at its end next the plate a, and serves to prevent the end from slipping.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the handle A, the springs B, the coils I), and the plate a, sub stantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT G. FORSYTH.
