JOHN A. SGHARF, 0F RICI-IWOOD, OI-IIO.
CORN-DRIER.
Application filed June 4, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. SCI-IARF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Richwood, in the county of Union and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Driers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for supporting ears of corn, to enable the corn to dry upon the cob, for preserving the same.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which may be constructed in long sections to be wound upon spools or the like, for shipment, and which may be cut into suitable lengths for convenient use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentloned character which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and convenient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in whlch l ke numerals are employed to designate hke parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, parts being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a prong member.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the body portion or spine of the device, which is preferably formed of two sections of wire 6, twisted about each other, as shown. The upper ends of the sections of wire are bent into an eye or loop 7, for the reception of a suitable support, such as a nail or the like, from which the device is suspended.
The device further comprises attaching elements, each of which embodies pairs of prongs 8. Each pair of prongs is preferably formed from a single section of wire as shown. The wire of each pair of prongs is first bent or coiled at about one section of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
Serial No. 301,706.
wire 6, as shown at 9, and then bent or coiled at about the two sections of wire 6, as shown at 10. The bending 9 enters the loop of the wire sections 6, and thereby prevents longitudinal displacement of the prongs 8, while the bending 10 prevents lateral displacement or turning movement thereof, the wire sections 6 at the loop forming a flat portion, as shown in Fig. 2.
Each attaching element preferably embodies two pairs of prongs 8, the wire of the same being individually twisted upon the wire sections 6, as shown at 9, and above stated. These attaching elements or sets of prongs 8 may be arranged at suitably spaced intervals. The device is preferably made in long sections and due to its flexibility may be wound upon spools or the like for shipment. The device may be cut in suitable sections as may be more convenient in use. The prongs 8 may be angularly adjllStBCl by the user, as may be found advantageous.
In use the device is suspended from its upper end and is hence substantially vertical. The ears of corn are presented to the prongs 8, which are then stuck through the central portions of the cobs. The prongs 8 may be angularly adjusted before or after the corn is placed thereon, as is obvious.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be. resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. A device for holding ear corn for drying, comprising a body portion including a pair of sections of wire bent together to form loops, and attaching elements carried by the body portion at spaced points, each attaching element embodying pairs of prongs, each pair of prongs being formed from a single portion of wire,'said portion being bent about one of said sections of wire and then about both of said sections of wire.
2. A. device for holding ear corn for drying, comprising a flexible body portion informed of portions of Wire, said portions of eluding a plurality of Wire sections twisted wire being first twisted about the individual together to provide flat loops, and attachsections of Wire and then twisted about both 7 ing elelnents carried by the body portion at sections of Wire and being passed ineiden- 10 5 spaced points, the attaching elements emtally through their respective loops.
bodying pairs of prongs the prongs being JOHN A. SCHARF.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five'eents each by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Washington, I). G.
