Description

.c. T. RAscmcK.
PAD AND PENCIL HOLDER.
APPLICATION HLEUJUNEZL 19H.
Patented Nov. 5, 1918.
v .QHABLES 'r. nAsonIc or scr. rAiJL, ivrr vnnso'rnf ran N-n PENCIL HOLDER.
To all whom it mayooacern: A w p Be it known that I, CHARLES'T. RASCHIOK, a citizen of'the United States, residing at 1 St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented anew and use-i ful Improvement, in Pad and Pencil Holders, of which thefollowing is a specification,
' This inventionrelates to a holdingsdevice for a' pad- .01 series of checks. which are r positive pad engaging means, whereby'a pad is engaged and firmly, held. A further objectis in providing a device which can be disengaged quickly from the stubs of the pad by compressing the sides of the same, to open the pad engaging loop.
It is-also an object in providing'a central circular spring loop by which the holding device can be held to a hook or chain secured to the user of the device and in havin'a convenient position-to the holder.
The above objects together with other features 'will be morefclearly. defined in the following specifications and claims.
In the drawing forming part of this specification: 5
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the pad holding device secured to a pad, part of which is-broken away.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the holding device in open position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective of an alternative construction showing the position it would assume in applying it to a pad.
Fig. 5 is a detail of a portion of the alternative construction.
In the drawing, A represents a pad or check holding device which is formed from a single piece of wire 1. The wire 1 is bent so as to form a central circular portion B at the top of the holding device A from which extend downwardly arms 2'. The
- supporting portion B of the device A is shaped like a portion of a coil' spring to give an outward spring action tothe arms 2.
Transverse coils 3 are formed on the lower or free ends of the arms 2 and fingers 4 extend upwardly from the coils 3 so as to form spring engaging fingers for a pencil C or other sutable marking element. The coils 3 Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented '5-,
' Application filed June 27, 1917. Serial N0.'1 7 7,4 22. I
give a spring action or resiliency to the fingers 4. The fingers i are formed with up per, curved ends 5 from which portions 6 extend downwardly, crossing the portions forming the engaging fingers 4 and lying adjacent thereto. The portions 6 have horizontal portions 7 and 8 formed on their lower end which are bent so as to extend inwardly at approximate right angles to the portions 6. The portions'7 and She adjacent and parallel to each other extending in opposite directions and pass centrally through the loops 3. then being bent to form semicircular portions and 10 which are positloned normally ust outside of the spring loops 3. The semicircular portions 9 :3
and 10 have inwardly extending engaging ends 11 and 12 whichare adapted to lie ap proximately parallel tothe arms or portions 7 and 8.
When the holder A is attached'or secured to the pad D, the engaging ends 11 and .12 areadapted to meet at the center of the pad D. The portions 7 and 8 and portions 9 and 10, together with theends 11 and 12, thus form an engaging loop E which is adapted to circumscribe the stub portion of the pad D, which is held by the staple 14.
In engaging the pad C, the portions 11 and- 12 are adapted tobe inserted between the leaves 13 just below the staple l4 as'is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, thus the engaging or holding device A is adapted to se-' curely holdthe pad D against disengagement from the device A without injury to the leaves.
In placing the device A on the pad D, the
construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5,- the end 11 of the loop E.
hasa hollow tube 15 rigidly secured thereto and the finger or engaging end 12 is adapted to freely slide in the open end '16 of the tube 15. This construction forms an expansible loop E and prevents the disengagement of the endj12 from the tube 15, but
allows it \to freely slide therein, so that when the spring arms 2 are compressed to gether, the loop E will be enlarged so that it can be easily slid or be drawn up between the leaves 13 to the top of the pad D and around the stub end 1'7 of the pad.
The forming of the device A out of spring wire and from a single piece of material, gives a holder which 15 light in weight, very durable and practical in use. The pencil holding fingers are used to hold a pencil in a convenient position, so that when a pencil is desired to mark on the checks or leaves 13, it is always handy. The circular supporting portion B is adapted to be engaged by any suitable means such as a belt hook or secured to a chain as may be desired. The arms 2 are positioned far enough apart to allow sufficient compression to open or enlarge the loop E the desired amount.
The holder A is adapted to be disengaged from the pad D by compression of the coiled loop B and engaged to the pad D by expansion of the coil B.
While I have illustrated a particular form and construction of device, I desire to have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to this particular construction but that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims:
1. In a device of the class described, a pad and pencil engaging means formed from a single piece of wire comprising a loop which is adapted to be enlarged by the compression of the sides of said device and spring pencil engaging fingers having spring coils through which said loop extends horizontally.
2. In a device of the class described, having a pad holding means formed from a single piece of wire, means for engaging a pad, said means comprising a horizontal loop which is adapted to be enlarged by compressing the sides of said device, and pencil engaging fingers slidably connected to an projecting from said loop.
3. In a device of the class described, a coiled supporting loop, arms formed with said coil, spring coils formed on the ends'of said arms, engaging fingers formed 011 said spring coils and a pad engaging loop formed horizontally'on the ends of said engaging fingers.
4:. In a device of the class described comprising, a pad and pencil holder formed from a single piece of wire, a spring coil having arms projecting therefrom, coils formed on the end. of said arms, fingers projecting from said coils toward said first coil and an expansible loop formed by the ends of said wire extending from said fingers for the purposes specified.
5. In a device of the class described com prising, a pad and pencil holder formed from a single piece of wire, a spring loop, arms extending from said loop, coil springs formed on the ends of said arms, pencil engaging fingers extending from said coils on the ends of said arms andthe ends of said wire extending through said coils on the ends of said arms to form a horizontally extending pad holding loop.
