able characteristicsv of construction both of the droprfall or drop seat and the side opening eflect union garment, which are so correlated that but asingle button is required to effect a complete closure of the garment and to hold the back flap or drop-fall in closed position, and which co-act when the back flap is unbuttoned: to afford an ample posterior opening free from any binding action upon the body in operation, and when said back flap is buttoned, to provide a garment with positive closing features which prevent gaping. Other objects of my invention will be obvious to those skilled. in the art from the 80 disclosure of a garment embodying it, which I have herein made'for the purpose of illustration.
Figure l is a front view of a garment embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a back view thereof, the postenior opening being closed and the legs of the garment being broken away.
Fig. 3 is. a view similar to Fig. 2 with the parts of the garment thrown back to form 40 the posterior opening.
Fig. 4- is a bottorn'plan view o'f'the garment as shown in Fig, 2-.
Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are developed views of the parts constituting the garment, the -sleeve parts; being omitted and the legs being broken away.
In the drawings, 1 represents the body of a garment having a front 2, back 3 and leg portions 4, 5. The sections or parts just described may be of any well known and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1918.

suitable construction or formation, each in itseli constituting no part of my present invvention. The garment illustrated is knit or woven in a well known manner.
The back of the garment is formed or cut to have a V-shaped opening with the point of the V uppermost and nearest the waist line. The lines 6 and 7 converge to form this opening, each extending from the point 8 at the top of the V to points 9 and 10, respectively, in the adjacent inside leg seams of the garment.
11 is a triangular shaped gore, preferably made of material possessing some elasticity.
It is fitted into the V-shaped opening and secured at its adjacent sides to the adjacent edges 6 and 7 of the garment body.
12 is a gore or back flap having an upper free edge 12, right side free edge 12 and left side secured edge 12. This gore is cut so as to have a tongue 12 at its lower lefthand corner and a V-shaped extension 12 between the tongue 12 and the right side free edge 12. The left side edge 12", illcluding the left side edge of the tongue 12, is sewed to the edge 7 between the points 8 and 10. The other edge of the tongue 12 is sewed to the left leg section along the line 10 and the extension 12 is carried under and forward and secured along the lines 10 and 9 at either side of the point of intersection of the legsections at the crotch, so as to form a permanently closed crotch. The back flap 12 may be cut quite fullfladjacent its lower right hand edges or the parts which form the permanently closed crotch, so as to preclude the possibility of the garment binding at these points, this fullness of cut not being sufiicient to cause gaping.
13 is a triangular shaped 'ore extending preferably from a point adjacent tothe lower right-hand corner of the triangular gore 11 into the V-shaped opening adjacent the upper end of the right leg section. It is sewed at its right-hand edge to the body of the garment along the line 6 between the gore 11 and the point 9 in the right leg seam, and along the line 9 between the point 9 and a point 9 which may be slightly above the point 9 at which the lower right hand 1% is a button hole in the back flap, and" 15 is a button secured to the body of the garment.
i Inorderto expose the posterior opening it is only :necessary to unbutton the one button 15 which normally holds theback flap 12 as a closure therefor, whereupon the -;right-hand free corner of the back flap may fall, downwardly and be moved or swung to the left about the line 7. The free. edge 13 of the gore 13 may be: swung or moved to the right, and since the triangular gore 11 is formed of. elastic material or material possessingsome elasticity, the distance between the lines 6 and 7 adjacent the posterior opening mayxbeincreased against the said elasticity of the gore 11.- This insures a posterior opening of ample proportions and i one, the boundaries of which, will not blnd the body of the wearer. When it is desired to close the posterior opening, the upper end of the gore 13 and the upperleft-hand corner iof the back flap 12 are drawn. toward each other by the contraction of the. lower end or edges of the triangular gore 11, as soon. as
the gore 11 is free to contract, and the free edge13 of the gore 13 positions itself .against the body and underneath the free edge of the back flap 12.
'free upper corner of theback flap 12 may .be again buttoned to the button 15.
Thereupon the The parts constituting my garment are constructed and arranged so that the posterioropening may be exposed without the necessity of operating the fastening meansfor the back flap 12.. .This is accomplished merely by pushing tothe left the free edge of the-back flap 12 and to the right the free edge .of the gore 13. I prefer, however, to provide the'garment with suitable fastening means,,s'uch as herein described and illustrated, in order that the upper free corner of the back flap 12 may bereadily unfastened and thrown-back in the event the garment shrinks at any time, or-for any other desired purpose. I
To. those skilled inthe art of making devices-50f the class described, many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my invent on will suggest themselves, without departing from.
the spirit and'scope thereof. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative, and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.
lVhat I claim is 1. An undergarment having a body in cluding leg sections, formed with an opening the walls of which converge to a point adjacent the waist line and to points in each of said leg sections, respectively, aback flap secured at one side edge to said body between the point of said opening adjacent said waist line and said point in one of said legsections, and having an extension carried forward and secured to said body between the leg sections to form a permanently closed crotch, the upper, edge and other side edge ofsaid backfiap being' free, a gore "secured to the otherside wall of said. opening. and having a projection extending intoand secured to the converging walls of said opening in the adjacent leg section, the said back flap when-in closedposition overlapping the free edge of said gore and afastening device between the upper free corner of said back flap and the body. H
- 2.. An. undergarment having a body formed with a permanently closed. crotch, andan. opening bounded byhnes WhlCll converge to a point near the waist'of the garment,a
gore secured at either side to the adjacent edge wall of said opening near' its upper end,
the lower edge of said gore forming-the'upper boundary of the'posterior opening for the garment, a back flap secured at one Sld edge. to said body and'arranged to close said:
posterior opening, and a fastening device 'for. detachably connecting the free side of said back flap to the body.
3. An und ergarment having a body formed opening bounded by lines which converge to a point near the waist of the. garment,- -a
' triangular gore secured at either side to the adjacent edge wallof said opening near its upper end, the lower edge of said triangular gore forming the upper boundary of the posterior opening for the garment, a back-flap secured at oneside edge to said body and arranged to close said posterior opening,
'with a permanentlyclosed crotch, and an V and a fasteningdevice for detachably connecting the free side oflsaid back flap tothe body.
I 4. Anundergarment having a body formed with an opening, a gore secured above its lower edge to the adjacent walls" of said opening, the loweredge of said gore-forming the upper boundary of the posterior opening for the garment, a back flap secured at one side to said body, arranged to close 'SELld posterior opening and' formingat its lower end with said body-a permanently closcd crotch, and a fastening device for detachably connecting the free side' 'ofsaid be k rey.
5. An undergarment having a body with it posterior opening, one side of which is formed by the free edge of u gore, the upper end of which is formed by the :free edge of another gore, and the other side of which is bounded by the edge of a back flap secured to the body of the garment, said back flap at its lower end forming with the body :1 permanently closed crotch and. having its upper and outside edges free, and a fastening de- 10 vice between the upper outside corner of the buck flap and the body.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
