ROBERT L. MARGOLYES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
UNION GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 19115.
Application filed September 25, 1913. Serial No. 791,773.
To ail whomit may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT L. MAReoLYns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Union Garment, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
My invention relates to garments known as unionsuits, and the object thereof is to provide a suit having an opening in the rear for obvious purposes, the body of the garment adjacent the opening being adapted to yield laterally to obviate the necessity of pulling different parts of the garment trying to enlarge the said opening when in need of using the same.
I obtain the above object by providing a bifurcated garment in the rear portion of which I provide a gusset of elastic material so positioned as to increase the size of the opening in the rear of the garment when necessary.
The invention consists of the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and fully set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters indicate coresponding parts in all the views and in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of an embodiment of my invention showing the rear opening closed; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the rear opening open and showing the location of the elastic gusset forming part of the wedge-shaped member secured in the crotch of the rear blank and customary to most bifurcated garments; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the wedge-shaped member with the gusset secured thereto.
Referring to the drawings, 5 represents the front blank of a suit and 6, the rear blank of the same. The two blanks are similar with the exception that the rear blank 6 is provided with a waist band 7 formed preferably of elastic material and also with a cut-out or slit 8 into which is fitted a wedge-shaped member 9 having preferably the shape shown in Fig. 3. The wedge-shaped member 9 is secured with the edge ae to one side of the cut-out of the rear blank 6. The opposite edge e-c remains unsecured to the other side of the cut-- out and forms a rear opening. The base edge ac, is arcuated and forms a continnation of the edge of the rear blank, which is secured, as the other edges of the rear blank, to the edges of the front blank. The
wedge portion 9 positioned in the cut-out of the rear blank 6 is wider adjacent its base, thus giving more room at this portion of the garment.
The opening c0d formed by the wedge-shaped member 9 and the edge of the cut-out of the rear blank is made to dilate by providing in the wedge portion 9 a member 10 made of elastic material, preferably Jersey, and forming part of the wedge portion adjacent the base of the same, as shown in Fig. 3 by the letters Z)-0cZ. The edge b0 of the gusset forms the continuation of the edge ab of the wedge portion 9 and is secured to the edge of the front blank 5 similar to the manner in which the edge ab is secured. It could be said that the rear blank 6 is provided with an elastic member adjacent its opening, as in reality the wedge portion 9 is of the same material as the rear blank. This member 10 permits a lateral yielding of the rear portion of the garment, thereby permitting the broadening of the opening formed by the unsecured edges of the wedge member 9 and the rear blank 6.
It is understood that the size and shape of the member 10 can be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of the lnvention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A union suit comprising,a front lank, a rear blank having a cut-out, and a wedge-shaped member having an arouated edge, said blanks and member being of nonelastic material, one straight edge of said wedge-shaped member and one edge of the cut-out forming an opening, the other straight edge of said wedge-shaped member being secured to the other edge of the cut-out, the arouated edge of said wedgeshaped member being secured to the front blank, said wedge-shaped member having an elastic portion adjacent the opening formed by the straight edge of said wedgeshaped member and a cut-out in the rear blank.
2. A union suit comprising,-a front blank, a rear blank having a cut-out, and a wedge-shaped member having an arcuated edge, said blanks and member being ofnon: elastic material, said Wedge having" an elastic portion at the arcuated edge, said Wedge-shaped member having one straight edge thereof secured to one edge of the out:
out in the-rear-blank, the other edge of the.
cut out, with the other straight edge of the Wedge-shaped member forming an opening, the arcuated edge of said Wedge-shaped 10 member being secured to the front blank,
ROBERT L. MARGOLYES.
