J. HOLMES. COMBINATION UNDERGARMENT.
No. 5%,493. I Patented Nov. 20, 1894.

a'rnur COMBINATION=UNDERGARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,493, dated November 20, 1894.
Application filed July 27, 1894. Serial No. 518,688. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN HOLMES, of Boston, county of Sufiolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Oombination-Undergarments, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of the class of garment represented in United States Patent No. 315,093, dated April 7, 1883. The garment shown in said patent has two front flaps and two back flaps, the front flap being stitched each along one of its edges to the front edge of one half of the garment, one edge of each back flap being stitched to the edge opposite of each half at the back of the garment, the lower ends of the back flaps and the front flaps being also stitched one to the other in line with the closing seam from the ankle to the knee. In the garment referred to three seams come quite close together just at or above the knee at the inner side of the leg, making the garment heavy at that part and reducing its elasticity, and to avoid this and improve the garment, its fit, and reduce its cost, I have devised a novel W-shaped or five ended gore piece having eight selvage edges, it serving for both the front and back flaps.
Figure 1 shows the back of a garment provided with my novel gore; Fig. 2, the front of the said garment, and Fig. 3 shows the gore detached, but pulled one-half partly from over the other half to better show its shape.
The garment shown contains two halves A, B, joined by a seam a at the back, and having a fly with button and button-holes at front, and suitable sleeves, seams being formed at the inner sides of the legs from the ankles to about the point 1). As so far described the garment is substantially as in said patent.
To afford the necessary fullness about the hips and thighs requires the gore piece, and herein applies my presentinvention the said gore piece being set into the crotch portion of the garment, as will be described.
The gore piece shown detached in Fig. 3 is of W-shape, or it has central overlapping portions O, D, with lateral wings O, D, it presenting five ends 0, d, e, f, g, and eight selvage edges, as follows: from c to f, c to h, d toh, dtoi, etoi, eto g,d tof,and d to g. The edge d g, is stitched to the rear edge m of the half B of the garment, and the edge cZ- to' the edge n of the half A of the garment, and this done the five pointed or W- shaped gore piece has the edge cf carried to the front of the garment and stitched to the half B along the edge m, as shown by full lines Fig. 2, and by dotted lines Fig. 1, and the edge e-g, is carried to the front and stitched to the edge at, as also shown in said figures. The upper ends of the lateral wings, are thus secured to the front of the legs adjacent the crotch, and their lower ends are secured to the inner sides of the legs between the waist and the knee. The open space ch dh, and di-ei, may be partially closed if desired, say to the point 0, that depending-altogether on the diameter of the leg of the wearer. The upper ends of the lateral wings O D are at the front carried up high enough to form parts of the button and button-hole pieces. See Fig. 2. The point dis made to terminate substantially at the waist of the garment in the back seam a the central portion O, D, overlapping at the back of the garment.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Acombination garment composed of two halves A, B, and a W-shaped gore set into the crotch portion of the garment, said gore having lateral Wings 0, D, and central portions 0, D, one overlapping the other at the back of the garment, the upper ends of said lateral wings being secured to the front of the legs adjacent the crotch, substantially as described.
2. A combination garment composed of two halves A, B, and a W-shaped gore set into the crotch portion of the garment, said gore having lateral wings O, D, and central portions 0, D, one overlapping the other at the back of the garment, the upper ends of said lateral wings being secured to the front of the legs adjacent the crotch, and the lower ends of the wings being secured to the inner sides of the legs between the waist and the knee, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN HOLMES.
