UNION SUIT.
Original application filed July as, 1913, Serial Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 813,370.

Continuation of application filed January 21,
To all whom it may concern] Be it known that I, SYDNEY Jul-Ix, a citrzen of the United States of Americr, resid- 111g at 1727 Madison avenueQcity of Haitimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Union Suits, oif vwhich the following is a specifiction.
The invention relates to a one-piece undergarment or union suit, and particularly to a garment having a rear flap opening and permanently closed crotch.
This application is a continuation of my application No. 781,317, tiled July 26th, 1913, showing the same garment.
Union. suits with the closud'erotch' have been otl'ered to the trade and are now in use, but they are objectionable because of the unsightly and inconvenient fullness of the crotch which is the previous construction. This defect is more marked when the suit is constrin-t'al of non-elastic material of the kind now largely used in the manufacture of light weight underwear as nainsook and similar materials, than it is in the case of the more elastic knit fabrics, and the present inven tion is particularly applicable to garments constructed of non-elastic materials, though other materials may be used within the scope of the invention.
To overcome the dilliculty referred to and produce a new, improved and perfectly fitting garment with a posterior flap open ing conveniently operable and providing the necessary degree of accessibility, is the object of my invention. 7
I am aware of the existence of the Johnson Patent No. 793,200 and oi the fact that various garments differing from the one shown in this patent to a slight degree are on sale. These latter garments are unlike that of the Johnson patent principally in that the point i of the flap L is removed so that the flap opening extends down to the-inseam on the right. On the left the seam which joins the seat-piece or rear flap to the left rear section of the garment, in both instances extends down to the inseam, the seat-piece or rear flap thus formed being a single piece of material having two depending points extending down the legs. Referring to this in the terms of the ordinary trousers garment, both the rear sections 2 e cut away on the side Where the cena necessary "feature of.
spending ter rear seam should be to provide room for the rear flap which. covers a considerable area on both sides of the center of the rear of the garment. As distinguished from this the applicant in the preferred form of his invention has evolved a garment in which, referring particularly to the lower or trousers portions, three stations of the pattern, i. 0., the front and one, preferably the left, rear section, are similar in form to the corresponding sections of the ordinary trousers garment or iunhirdrawers, except that the inseam is thrown well forward, the front; sections being cut away and the rear sections increased correspondiugly to achieve this result and at the same time give the garment thesame lit which it would have it cut in the ordinary manner with the closed crotch and without. the rear llnp opening.
The right rear section is made in two parts, a right rear section proper but cut away to form a real llap opening, and a [lap which is joined to the left rear section along the central rear seam from the waist as far as the crotch point and to the front section on the right from the crotch point for a 'few inches down the inseam; The other or free edge of this llap is curved outward centrally and extends from the crotch seam upward to the center seam, the top of the flap being preferably joined to the waistline of the garment. The right rear section is cut away to form an opening corresponding to the flap, but otherwise is similar in shape to the corresponding portion of the left rear section. In fact, in the preferred embodiment of the invention the two parts of the right rear section when laid together in normal relation, are identical in form with the left rear sections.
It is important. to note that the rear sections, the left rear section being a single piece and the right r war section formed of the flap, and a cooperating piece, which when placed in their operative relation, term a pattern similar to the left rear section, are similar in outline to the corre portions of the usual trousers garment except that the points of the. pattern which meet at the crotch point. are clongated and the leg portions are slightly widened, the extra material thus provided being turned forward and compensated for by a corresponding preduetion of the front sections. In this way an improved fitting effect is obtained and the flap opening is elongated so that it extends well forward around the curve of the leg, and by the construction thus obtained, the flap is caused to open and swing in a convenient manner which will be apparent from inspection of the drawing. The peculiar accessibility aside from the extra length of the flap opening which results from moving the inseam forward, is due to the pointed effect in the rear of the garment obtained by elongating the crotch point ends of the rear sections, giving the meeting edges at the rear seam a sharp rearward curve. The point thus formed disappears when the garment is worn in the ordinary manner, but when the flap open, it in effect turns inside out and swings the flap opening inward toward the center of the garment.
The drawing illustrates a union suit constructed in accordance with my invention inits preferred form.
Figure 1 is a front elevation. rear elevation. Fig. 8 is a plan. Fig. 4 shows the rear sections separated. Fig. is a view showing the rear flap opened, the point formed by turning in the rear sections being turned inside out to swing the opening to the center. Fig. (3 is a fragmentary View showing: the right half of the garment folded on a central longitudinal plan the left half being: 1(.Ii'1()\(,(l. This the garment as it would hang if suspended by the top corners of the roar section, the tron! sci-thins being folded in.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, ,each oi which is used to indicate the same or corresponding parts in the different lipui'os: the garment illustrated is formed of pieces of non-elastic material. though the number of pieces in the general pattern may be varied, and elastic or knitted material may be used within the scope of my invention. There are two front sections 1 forming the front of each leg and the corresponding half of the upper portion of the garment, a rear section 2' on the left side of the garment forming" the rear side of the left leg below the waistline, a right rear section 3 similar to the section 2 but cut away on the dolled lines 4- leading from a point on the waistline to the crotch or inseam 22 on the inside of the right leg at 6 three or four inches from the crotch point, thus forming an opening to be covered by the rear flap 7. This flap in its preferred form extends from the center of the waistline at 5 to the crotch point 9, being joined to the left rear section 2 throughoutth'e' length of the rear seam 10 which is curved sharply outward and turned in as hereinafter described. Thetop edge of the rear flap i fromthe point 5 to the pointtths sufficiently long to give the necessary overlap to the closure. It is sewed to the waistseam 11 and the bottom edge 12 is joined to the front righ section 1 along the inside or crotch seam'from the crotch point 9 to the point 6. Thus the rear flap 7 which as shown and in its preferred form is a foursicled section, is' fastened on three sides and has a free swing. as to the fourth side 13 which is preferably curved outward from top to bottom, the peak being near the center, and fastened by any suitable means as a button and buttonhole 14.
.ln the form of the invention shown the sixth section consists ofa single piece 15 forming the back of the top portion of the garment, though this is in nowise related to. the invention and the construction of the entire garment except as to the crotch and rear opening, may be widely varied without departure from the invention and any material may housed.
In the garment shown the top section 15 is joined to the rear sections 9. and 3 by means of an elastic band 16 which may be of knit or any similar or suitable elastic material. This is to give elasticity to the ,garment and freedom of movement to the wearer.
deferring to Fig. 4-, the peculiar construction of'thc roar sections will be noted. The left rear section which as shown is a single or rather flat piece of material, is given an excessive curve as to the rear scam line 17. as will be u'mlcrstood from Fig. 4-, and this scam and the crotch point 18 of the rear section are elongated to an extent represeutcd by the line 18. if), and this section is increased adjacent the inseam 32 to an extent rc 'ircsentcd by the distance between the line 22 and the line 20 of Fig. 4-. in this way the inseam is thrown well forward, the front sections being reduced, as shown at 21, 22 in Fig. 1, to conform to the increase of the rear section, the edges 23 of the rear sections and flap. see Fig. 4, being turned forward and forming in client, a portion of the front of the garment. The rear of the garment is thus given when hanging loose, the pointed effect illustrated in Fig. 6, the point disappearing; when the garment is worn and the middle portion of the rear seam is turned outward. to conform to the body but tending to turn inside out and throw the flap opening over toward the center of the garment when the rear flap is open as shown in Fig, 5. This is an eminently desirable result and one which is not incident to and cannot be obtained with the usual flateseahpiece extending on both sides of the rear of the garment, as will be easily understood by those familiar with the cific terms herein are used in their descriptive rather than in their limiting sense and the scope of the invention is defined in the claims.
I claim-- 1. A closed crotch union under garment having a rear section and a rear flap meeting and secured together on a vertical median line, a rear section cut away to form a rear opening, the rear flap and the last mentioned rear section thus cut away, together forming a section similar in outline to the first mentioned rear section, the rear median seam edges of both sections being curved outward sharply at the bottom, the inseam edges of both sections being extended and the garment having front sec-- tions with inseam edges correspondingly cut away to move the crotch or inseam well forward, the front sections being seamed together on a median line at the lower portion of the front, and the flap being secured to the front section on the same side along the inseam from the crotch point down to the free edge of the flap, so that when the garment is hanging free, the rear median seam curves outward to a point, at
which point the rear sections are turned inward to the crotch or inseam, therear flap opening extending from a point well. up the back around the curve of the leg to the inseam at a point well below the crotch point, so that the flap is wholly on one side of the rear median seam and when the rear flap is opened and swung to the left, the point referred to thus formed by the curvature of the rear seam, turns inside out and swings the opening to the middle of the garment.
2. A permanently closed crotch union undergarment provided with a rear opening, said garment comprising front and rear portions, one half of one rear section extending to the vertical median line and the opposite rear section cut away from said median line, a rear flap having one edge sewed to the first mentioned rear section along such median line from a point near the waistline downwardly through the crotch and upwardly a short distance on the front of the garment and thence 'downwardly along the inseam of one leg, the opposite edge of such flap being free, the free edge extending from a point near the waistline to a point on the inseam of the leg a considerable distance below the apex of the crotch whereby such flap extends from the vertical median line to one side only of such garment.
