Description
Jan. 12, 1965 o. ERTESZEK 3,164,843
UNDERGARMENT FOR WOMEN Filed Jan. 25, 1963 INVENTOR. 0 6A? EEK-525K United States Patent ()flice This invention has to do with improvements in what generally may be characterized as half slip-type undergarments, and particularly a design of split configuration giving the garment characteristics of'both a slip and a pantie. As illustrative of this general type of garment, reference may be had to Patent No. 3,066,308 issued December 4, 1962, to me on Slip-Type Undergarment, wherein that invention is characterized as being made of a usual lightweight half slip material fashioned to have separate leg extents, proper conformance and hang of which are aided by front and bottom lace bands.
The present invention is primarily concerned with a novel undergarment possessing the advantages and desirable features of a combined half slip and pantie, but more particularly with features adapting it for form fitting, outer garment support and leg and crotch concealment, preferably both front and rear. Accordingly, the invention contemplates making the garment of material which is desirably smooth to the touch and sufficiently heavier than the shear-type slip materials, to give outer garment support,
In accordance with the invention, the garment is made to have an upper torso-encircling portion, a closed crotch and leg portion extending down to normal half slip length,
with at least a front central straight hanging fold construction, and preferably correspondingly at the rear, the
.foldsserving to give apparent skirt continuity and to afford multiple thickness crotch coverage as well as leg concealment.
Each fold configuration results from vertically hanging double thicknesses of the garment material sewed at the upper end of the fold to the torso encircling portion tending centrally from above, preferably a lowered rear fold through the top of thegarment.
All the stated features and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following detailed description of an illustrative embodiment shown by the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is aview showing the garment in front elevation, with the front fold opened to show the, crotch ex- 7 tremity; I
FIG. 2 is a view showing the garment in rear elevation;
FIG. 3 is a fragment-ary'enlarged cross section taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 4 is an enlarged cross section on line 4-4 of FIG. 1. v
The body 10 of the garment, made of taffeta-type material, is shown to have normal half-slip length from the waistband 11 to the bottom of the garment. The latter is split vertically at 12 to form circularly closed leg portions 13 extending below the closed crotch formation gen-. erally indicated at 14, the lower extent of which is revealed in FIGQI.
As shown in FIGS. 3 and the crotch 14 is formed by doubling inwardly and sewing together the body fabric along a seam line 15 curving downwardly from the" 3,164,843 Patented Jan. 12, 1965 upper torso encircling portion 16 as shown in FIG. 3. Sewing of the material to the closed crotch configuration thus forms the leg openings 17 (see FIG. 4).
The body fabric is doubled upon itself to form vertically hanging front and rear folds 18 and 19 which overlap the leg extents in symmetrical relation to the vertical center line of the garment, which corresponds to the section line 3-3 in FIG. 1. The transverse widths of the folds are proportioned to the garment substantially as illustrated, sufiiciently to give apparent skirt continuity in the straight hanging condition of the folds as illustrated in FIG. 2, as well as to effect substantial leg concealment when the wearer walks. V
The folds 18 and 19 are defined by sewing the doubled thicknesses 18a and 19a to the material underneath at a location above the bottom extent 14 and toward the bottom of the torso encircling area 16. Preferably, parallel edge extents of the folds are sewn to the material underneath along seam lines 24 of about the proportionate length illustrated, and the tops of the folds terminate at seam lines 21 converging to an apex at the center line. Thus the folds are so secured as to hang straight down in symmetrically centered relation to the front and rear of the'garment.
As previously indicated, the torso encircling portion 16 usually will be made form fitting and therefore is rendered openable by a slide fastener 22 extending at the rear center of thegarment upwardly from above the fold 19 through the waistbandll; As a preferred feature of importance, the top apex .of the rear fold 19 terminates below (say two inches) the corresponding apex of the front fold 18, so that in the worn condition of the garment the slide fastener terminates below the curve of the derriere, see FIG. 3, thus assuringcomplete smoothness of contour on the body of the wearer.
It will be understood that the drawing is illustrative of the invention in a typical, though preferred embodiment,
andthat changes in details may be made without departure from the invention in its intended spirit and scope.
I claim: V
1. A half slip-type undergarment comprising two panels joined together along front and rear central seams and forming an upper torso encircling portion, a closed crotch and separate legs extending below the crotch fromopposite sides of said seams, the front central portion of the garment having a vertical fold formed by doubling a vertical extent of one of said panels and sewed at its upper end to said torso encircling portion, said fold extending downwardly to overlap the legs at opposite sides of said front central seam and to conceal the crotch area, said fold having upper substantially parallel side extents equidistant from said front central seam, one of said side extents being exposed and the other being concealed by the fold.
2. A garment according to claim 1, in which both upper parallel side extents and the top end of said fold is sewed to the garment material. I
3. A garment accordingto claim 2, in which said top end of the fold is sewn convergently to an apex symmetri cal with said front central seam of the garment.
4. A half slip-type undergarment comprising two panels joined together along front and rear-central seams and forming an upper torso encircling portion, a closed crotch and separate legs extending below the crotch from opposite sides of said seams, the front and rear central portions of the garment having corresponding front and rear vertical folds sewed at their upper ends to said torso en-. circling portion, one ofsaid folds being formed by doubling a vertical extent of one of said panels and the other fold being formed by doubling a vertical extent of the other panel, said folds extending downwardly to overlap the legs at opposite sides of said seams to conceal the,
front and rear crotch areas, each of said folds having upper substantially parallel side extents equidistant from an underlying one of said seams, one of the side extents of each fold being exposed and the other being concealed by the fold.
5. A garment according to claim 4, in which the rear of said torso encircling portion has a slide fastener extending centrally from above the rear fold through the top of the garment.
6. A garment according to claim 4, in which the rear fold terminates below the elevation of the front fold top terminal.
7. A garment according to claim 6, in which the rear of said torso encircling portion has a slide fastener extending centrally from above the rear fold through the top of the garment.
8. A garment according to claim 7, in which upper parallel side extents of the folds are sewn to the garment material and the top ends of the folds are sewn thereto convergently to apexes symmetrical with said seams.
