li l'aBei-it known that I, KIRK H. WHITE, a "citizen of the United'States, residing at Osweg'o," countyfofOswego, and State of New uYork,--}hawj'e invented certain new and usei111. Improvements in Union Suits, fully described arfl represented in the followingspecification and the accompanying 'drawingSy-forming apart of the same,
j hThi sqinvention relates to, that class of "underwear known as union suits, and the iniye'ntion is I especially intended for knitted under-wear ofthis class, although applicable nIsoftonnionsuits made wholly or partially.
flhev especial bject of the invention is to "rovidefan improved union suit of that class :.1n' 'wh1ch' there JS a-permanent closure in frjontofthe' crotch between the front openi ingnnd'posterior opening of the garment,'
-and 'thd posterior opening is closed and :opened by a side flap, and particularly to provide a ga-rment having a free opening and-sure closing of the posterior opening and securing-comfort and proper fit, While "at the same time simple and cheap of manu- 'facture,
. out in the claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective front view of a union suit on a wearer in a standing position; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the suit; Fig. 3 is a plan view looking-at the crotch laid out fiat, and Fig. 4 is a planview of one of the two inserts used for closing the posterior opening. Referring to the drawings, A is the main body of the union suit having the front opening 1 extending down to a point in front of or above the crotch, and shown as buttoned, as usual, and having its posterior opening extending from the end or near the 'end of the front opening to a point 1n the back such as to give the desired freedom of opening and closing the posterior opening by the inner and outer seat flaps a, b, the outer flap a being shown as secured by the button 3. 'The inner and outer overlapping flaps a, 7) are formed by separate inserts, preferably of the same form and as shown Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 14, 1914i.
' Application filed May 3, 1912. Serial N 0. 694,891.
in Fig. 4, which inserts extend from the center of the back down into the leg, to the inner leg seams .t, and are secured throughout their outer edges 5 and bottom edges 6 by-stitching, while their inner edges 7 are free, so as to overlap and close the crotch in the normal posit-ion of the suit, while pernntting the crotch to be opened up to theseamed edges 6 in front of and above the crotch.
' It will be seen from the drawings that the lower-portions of the inserts a, I), in making the suit, are carried around through the crotch to the front of the garment,- and the hook-shaped portions 8 brought upward out of their natural position for stitching together across the front of the suit-on the lines 6,which provides a looseness or fullness of the overlapping inserts through the crotch, thus giving ample room for the person of the wearer and preventing all binding in the crotch. These hook shaped portions" extending through the crotch and secured to the body across the garment in front of the crotch on their outside edges, not only prevent binding, but enable the required crotch opening to be secured without such enlarge-- ment of the garment seat and crotch a would be .t'eiplired if the inserts were madewith straight sides 6, 7, and the triangular portions formed thereby carried through the crotch and the straight side 6 secured across the garment, and they also reduce the amount of cloth'overlapping in the crotch,
so as to make a less bungling and more comfortable garment, and secure a better closing of the crotch, these hook-shaped portionstending to draw the overlapping inserts together and secure a better fitting garment.
The suit is shown as having its shirt and drawers portions connected by an elastic band B, formed of knit material, with the wales preferably running transversely to or around the garment for vertical elasticity, the lower edge of the band B being inclined upward from the opposite sides on the back of the garment, so that the central portion of the band is higher up in the back than the side portions. This elastic band is pref; erably used in connection with the posterior opening and crotch construction, but the inventioninay be used without this elastic band feature.
W hat is claimed is:'
A union suit having a posterior openingextending through the'crotch a'iidclesdlry 1 overlapping side flaps extending from the be secured to the body of the suit on theipbuterfl.
formed by ck down the legs and edges and having hook-shaped =porti'bi1s 8 on; their inner edges vextendmg through the" crotch and secured to the body across the garment infront of the crotchv 011 their outside edges, said inserts heving their3inner,
