such as will enable othersskilled in the 'art to which it appertaiiis tonfake use the same.
.This invention relates-to improvementsin pin holders and particularly to that type uied in combination with desk trays or the li (e.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will positively clamp pins and dispose them within easy reach of the user.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which, although extremely simple in construction and operation is highly efiicient in its purpose,
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts as described in the specification and claims and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved pin holder.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the plane of line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the plane of line H of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the plane of line 55 of Fig. 3.
The present embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprisesa base 1 preferably molded from glass or the like, and, although shown in the form of a rectangular desk tray, may be of any preferred configuration. The desk tray, as illustrated, is provided in its upper face, at the front, with serrations or grooves for the purpose of holding pens, pencils, etc., and, at a substantially central point, ink wells are disposed in suitable sockets.
The base is provided at its rear upper edge, with an upstanding rib 2, for many apparent purposes and for one purpose in particular which will be seen as the description progresses. At each end of the base,
set. forth.
near its lower edge and adjacent the side provided with the upstanding rib is a pivot socket 3 whose purpose will be described. Disposed adjacent the longitudinal flat side provided with the riband parallel therewith is a flat clamping plate 4L formed from springmetal and of a width substantially equal to the height of the adjacent side of thebase, and having a laterally extending arm 5 at each. end to be connected to the adjacent end of the base in a" manner 'tobe In connecting the clamping plate to the base, each arm is provided adjacent its lower outer edge with a depending ear 6, which is in the same vertical plane with the arm, and
which is provided with a central pivot stud 7 to be received in the adjacent pivot socket in the base, whereby the clamping plate may be swung outwardly and downwardly so that a paper strip of pins 8 may be placed between the plate and the adjacent side of .9 which are adapted to receive the detents 10 stamped from the arms at points near their upper edges. The clamping plate and arms, being formed from spring metal, provides means for springing and positively retaining the pivot studs 7 in their sockets, and for retaining the plate in its clamping position, by springing the detents 10 into the sockets 9.
When the pins are in proper position the heads are disposed above the upper edge of the rib 2, said upper edge being horizontally alined with that of the clamping plate whereby a firm gripping or clamping action is exerted on each of the pins. The clamping plate, it is to be understood, may be spaced from the base a sufficient distance to permit a single strip of pins to be placed in position for clamping, or. to permit placing a whole paper package of pins therein.
It will be noted that this invention is extremely simple in construction and operation construction may be made without sacrificing the principal advantages. 7 a
I claim 1. A device of the class described comprisinga base having a substantially rectangular side, a flat clamping plate disposed adjacentsaid side of the base and having a pair of laterally extending arms on its ends to contact the opposite ends of said base, said arms being pivotally connected adjacent their lower edges to the adjacent ends of said base whereby the clamp may be swung outwardly and downwardly to receive a strip of pins between the plate and said side of V the base.
2. A device of the class described comprising a base having a substantially rectangular side and a pair of sockets in its opposite ends adjacent the upper face of the base and said side, said base having a pair of pivot sockets in its ends spaced vertically below the first named sockets,a flat clamping plate disposed adjacent said side of the base and having a pair of lateral arms on its ends, a pivot stud adjacent the lower edge of each arm to be received in the adjacent pivot socket whereby the clamp plate may my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
