ATTACHMENT FOR WORK-ESENCHES- $PEGIFIOATIONf0rming part of Letters Patent No. 759,077, dated May 3, 1904.
Application filed August 22 1903. Eerial No. 170,427. (No model.)
To (all who/1t (It HT/(by concern:
Be it known thatl, \VILLLAMJ. (JoNNnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmont, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for W ork- Benches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for work-benches, especially adapted for carpenters use; and its object is to provide a combined stop and clamp for holding the strips of wood in proper position for planing, said attachment being adjustable to adapt it for use with strips of different sizes.
A further object is to provide an attach ment which permits the bench-screw ordi narily employed to be dispensed with.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in \VlllCll Figure 1 is a plan View of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the adjustable stop-plate, and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the extension.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is the body of the device, having a downward]y-projecting extension 52 having a rectangular recess 3 in its front face, the side walls of which are grooved for the reception of beads 4., formed at the sides of a slide 5, which fits snugly within the recess 3. A longitudinally-extending groove 6 is formed within the rear face of the slides, and secured therein is a spring-strip 7, which is adapted to bear upon the inner wall of recess 3 and hold the slide 5 in any position to which it may be adjusted. The slide has a preferably rectangular head 8, which is adapted to fit within a corresponding recess 9, formed within the body 1 at its forward edge, and the rear edge of this recess is cut away, as shown at 10, so as to permit the end of a linger of the user to be placed into engagement with the recessed inner end 11 of the head 8. The forward edge of the head 8 is toothed or serrated, as shown at 12.
In rear of the head 8 and at opposite sides thereof are arranged earns 13 and let, respectively, having pivot-pins 15, which project downward from their lower faces and are held in engagement with the body 1 in any suitable manner. One of these cams is circular in form, while the other is in the form of a seg- 6O ment of a circle, the straight edge of which is toothed or serrated, as shown at 16. The curved faces of the cams are preferably milled.
The device above described is adapted to be fitted within the upper face of a work-bench 5 and secured in position by means of screws or other devices inserted through apertures 17 formed within the body 1. When it is desired to work the edge of a strip of wood, it has been customary to place it within a 7 bench-screw in order to hold it in proper position. By employing the device herein described, however, it is merely necessary to swing the cam forward--to wit, toward the toothed edge 12 of the head 8---until the space 7 5 formed between the straight edge 16 and the cam 13 is suflicient to admit the strip. When the said strip is pressed forward, the cam 13 will be partly rotated automatically and will firmly clamp the stripin position. Larger Q strips can be held together by reversing the cams and using the milled faces of both of them for clamping upon the strip. When it is desired to use the stop, it is merely necessary to insert one finger into the recess 10, so 5 as to bring it into engagement with the inner edge 11 of the head 8. Said edge can then be drawn upward a desired distance and will be held in a desired position by reason of the frictional contact between the spring-strip 7 and 9 the rear face of the recess 3. It will be seen that the device is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction and can be readily attached to a work-bench.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; butI do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore re- I00 serve the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is 1. An attachment for Work-benches comprising abodyplate having a recess in one end thereof, a recessed extension depending from the plate, a slide Within said recess, longitudinally-extending ribs upon the slide engaging the walls of the recess, a spring secured within the slide and adapted to bear upon the extension, and a toothed head on the slide and normally seated Within the recess Within the body-plate.
2. An attachment for Work-benches comprising a body-plate having a recess in one end thereof, a recessed extension depending from the plate, a slide ithin said recess, longitudinally-extending ribs upon the slide engaging the Walls of the recess, aspring secured Within the slide and adapted to bear upon the extension, a toothed head to the slide normally seated Within the recess in the body-plate, and oppositely-disposed cams upon the base.
3. In an attachment of the character described, the combination With a body-plate having a recess therein; of a recessed extension to said plate, a slide adjustably mounted Within the extension, means for holding the slide in adjusted relation to the extension, a toothed head upon the slide adapted to be seated Within the recess in the body-plate, a circular cam mounted upon the body-plate, and an oppositely-disposed segmental cam upon the plate, said last-mentioned cam having a flat serrated face.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
