CHECKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent- Patented June '7, 1910.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES Gr. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jeiferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to pro- Vide an improved device for auditors, bookkeepers, and accountants use in checking amounts from books of original entry to ledgers and the like, or any other items or matter that requires checking, and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figures 1 and 2 are elevations taken at right angles to each other, of one form of the invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the type holder. Figs. 1 and 5 are elevations taken at right angles to each other, of another form of device. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is an elevation showing the device of Figs. 1 to 3 in position for use.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawing, 10 denotes a rigid handle on one end of which is mounted a clamp for securing a type holder. The clamp is composed of a sleeve 11 which is slipped over the end of the handle and made fast thereto in any suitable manner, and is formed with a pair of jaws 12 which are resilient so that they may be drawn together to grip the type holder. The jaws project a suitable distance from the end of the handle in alinement with its longitudinal axis, and at their extremities or free ends are enlarged as indicated at 13, said enlarged ends having alined openings to receive a clamping screw 14: which extends transversely of the longitudinal axis of the handle. The type holder in this form of device is constructed to hold two types, it being in the shape of a box which is formed of a strip of thin sheet metal bent to form a top 15, sides 16, and a bottom, the latter being formed by bending the lower ends of the sides inwardly as indicated at 17 the inner longitudinal edges of said portions 17 being spaced, a short distance apart, and formed each with a downwardly projecting ear 18, each of said ears having a slot 19.
The box herein described is rectangular in cross section, and the types 20, which may be ordinary rubber types, are held therein by drawing the side walls 16 together, as will be presently described, the spacing of the bottom portions 17 permitting this. A type is placed in each end of the box and projects therefrom sufiiciently for use. After the types are placed in the box, the latter is mounted on the handle by placing the ears 18 between the jaws 12,
with the screw 14 passing through the slots 19. The screw is now tightened to close the jaws on the ears, until they tightly grip the ears. This also draws the ears and side walls 16 together, and the latter are thus made to tightly grip the types 20. screw, therefore, not only serves to secure the box to the handle and the type in the box, but serves to adjust the box at a desired angle to the handle. The device is now ready for use, it being operated as an ordinary rubber stamp. The type box is adjusted at an angle necessary to get a clear imprint from the type, when the holder is in the accustomed pen holder position of the operator as shown in Fig. 7. The other type is brought into use by turning the handle on its axis and reversing the position of the type box.
In Figs. 4: to 6, is shown a device designed for a single type. As before, a handle 21 is provided, on one end of which is mounted and made fast, a sleeve 22. The outer end of this sleeve is cut away on a slant and squeezed together, and on said end is soldered or otherwise secured a holder for the type 23. This holder is also in the shape of a box formed of thin sheet metal, and having a bottom 24, side walls 25, and a top 26 formed by bending one of the side walls in wardly in the direction of, and up to within a short distance of the opposite side wall. By thus connecting the top to one of the side walls only, said walls may be spread to permit insertion of the type therebetween. The distance between the side walls is slightly less. than the width of the type, so that the latter requires ,to be squeezed into the box, in which it will be tightly held by frictional contact with the side walls, the resiliency of the metal of which the side walls are formed causing said walls to tightly grip the type.
