ERASER HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 35, 1905.
WIT EESES: l \/E" ITCI UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. ST. JOHN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO NEHOKIST MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPO- ERASER-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed January 25. 1905. Serial No. 242,675.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN 0. ST. J OHN, acitizen of the United States, residing in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Eraser-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of holders adapted to be applied to a rubber eraser in which the rubber is embraced by a holder which is adapted to be slid thereon or to be held in engagement therewith.
The nature of the invention is fully described below and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the upper side of an eraser with my holder applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 3 3, Fig. 1, the engaging clamp or open ring being shown in elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts. I
(0 represents a rubber eraser of the style and shape to which my improved holder is particularly adapted.
The holder consists of a metallic plate bent into the rectangular and tubular shape shown and comprising the top 6, sides 0, and the bottom, which consists of the inwardly-extending folds or wings d, parallel with the top and Witli their adjacent edges nearly touching, but preferably not in actual contact. This holder or case therefore is practically an open tube slitted longitudinally for its entire length on the under side. The top I) is provided centrally with a longitudinal slot 6, extending for almost the entire length of the top.
The stick of- .rubber a is provided substantially vertically with a deep slit extending, preferably, for a considerable proportion of the distance through the rubber, and in this slit extends the central fold f of a comparatively narrow metallic clamp consisting of the two parts constituting the said fold, the two outwardly extending or spreading portions 9 bending at right angles with the fold, the downwardly-extending parallel portions h, and the inwardly-extending underlap ping end portions 70, whose corners are preferably rounded, as shown in Fig. 2. Thus the clamp emmeans of the holder or case I) 0 (Z the rubber can be moved in and out and adjusted in said holder by means of the clamp g h is, which engages the rubber by means of its fold f, which extends through the slot 6. When the rubber is to be used for erasing purposes, the sides h of the clamp are grasped between the thumb and finger and are thus pressed against the corresponding sides of the holder or case, holding the same by friction and preventing relative movement between the case and the rubber. Hence the rubber is adjusted by grasping the clamp lightly and moving the case or is held rigidly in position by the natural pressure of the thumb and finger employed in using the rubber as an eraser. I
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An eraser-holder, comprising a rubber eraser, a case of shape to embrace and extend around the 'rubber and slide with relation thereto and slotted longitudinally in one of its surfaces, and aclamp engaged with the rubber through the slot in the case and extending over and around the sides of said case whereby inward pressure on the opposite arms of the clamp prevents relative movement between said case and clamp, for the purpose set forth.
2. An eraser-holder, comprising a rubber eraser, a case of shape to embrace and extend around the rubber and slide with relation thereto and slotted longitudinally in one of its surfaces and with another of its surfaces slitted for its entire length, and a clamp engaged with the rubber through the slot in the case and extending over and around the sides of said case whereby inward pressure on the opposite arms of the clamp prevents relative movement between said case and clamp, for the purpose set forth.
3. The herein-described eraser-holder comprising the case b, 0, d conforming substantially in shape to the rubber and inclosing the same, said case being provided with a longitudinal slot in its upper surface, a stick or to this specification in the presence of two subscrlblng Witnesses.
JOHN 0. ST. JOHN.
