This invention relates to certain improvement in dispensing containers for lipstick, eyebrow pencil and similar soft pasty cosmetics.
Particularly the invention relates to a type of container in which the cosmetic is supported in a carrier which is elevated and retracted within a casing by rotating one member relative to another member, and which type of container is generally known as a swivel type of lipstick container.
This invention pertains particularly to the construction of the pin member that is employed for elevating the carrier cup within the container 17 Claims. (Cl. 206-56) coincident with rotating one part of the container l relative to another part.` Heretofore, the pins for this type of article have been generally made from screw machine products or headed pins which have been more or less expensive to manufacture, requiring a dilicult riveting operation in assembling the pin to the carrier cup and presenting only a relatively small surface area of the pin head to the side edge ofa helical groove through which the pin head operates for elef vating and retracting the carrier cup Within the container".
It is one of the objects of this invention to make the elevator pin by blanking it out of flat sheet material providing for a longitudinal blank having lugs at the opposite ends inclined to the longitudinal axis of the blank such that the lugs will conform to the pitch of the helix when folded at right angles to said blank.
Another object of this invention is to fabricate the elevator pin from a at blank of sheet material so that it can be readily assembled and dis` assembled from the carrier cup, thus permitting the carrier cup to be `removed from the casing and salvaged in case any part of the casing is found defective.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully disclosed in connection with the accompanying drawing and as set forth in the annexed claims. l

Referring now to the drawing in which like' reference numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: the numeral I0 refers generally to a dispensing container with the cover member omitted. The container comprises an outside tubular shell casing II and an inside shell I2 rotatably mounted Within said casing II. Disposed between the outside shell cas` ing II and the inside shell I2 and adapted to be retained and carried by the outside shell casing I2 is a spiral sleeve I3 having a helical slot or groove Ill extending from end to end thereof.
The base or lower end of the inside shell I2 is provided with an enlarged integral head I5 having a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the outside shell casing II and preferably pro' vided with formed circumferential ribs to present a better gripping surface to facilitate inthe operation of the device. Removed from the open end of the inside shell I2 is an outwardly knurled bead I6 for holding the spiral sleeve I3` within confined quarters. The upper end of the outside shell casing II is spun over as at II to cover up the raw edge of the inside shell I2 and present a better finished appearance at the open end of the container I0.
Mounted to slide within the inside shell I2 `is a carrier cup or elevator member I8 in which la cosmetic stick `I9 is held. The inside shell is provided with a longitudinal slot `2i) extendin substantially the entire length thereof.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a much cheaper and simpler pin construction which cooperates with the mechanism generally employed in swivel type lipstick containers for the purpose of elevating and retracting the carrier cup therewithin. To this end the elevator pin,
generally indicated by the numeral 2|, is preferably made from a predetermined shaped flat blank 22 as illustrated in Fig. 5 and such as can be cut and blanked out from fiat sheet material. The blank 22 comprises a longitudinal body part 23 having biased portions Ze at opposite ends thereof that constitute the lug parts of the iinished pin 2l. 'The biased portions 24 are preierably made somewhat wider than the width of the body part 23 of the blank 2| for reasons as will appear later.
The body part of the blank 22 is iirst formed up about a center fold line as represented by the dot-and-dash line at 25 so that the body portion of the blank is folded flat upon itself into two thicknesses of material and constitutes the body,
part 26 of the pin 2|. The biased or :lug portions 24 are next bent substantially at right angles in opposite directions along fold lines 21 at the op posite ends of the body portion 125 proper. The lugs 24 are finally formed into an arcuate shape as shown in Fig. 6 so as to conform substantially to the outside diameter of the inside .shell I2.
' The carrier cup is provided with a rectangular opening 23 through its side Wall, the axis of which is `parallel to the cup axis and of a width comparable to the double material thickness of the pin body `part 26.
'Inl-assembling the rcontainer parts together the spiral sleeve I3 will iirst be slipped over the inside shell I2 and confined between 'the head `I5 and the knurled bead I6. The carrier cup i3 will next be dropped into the interior of the inside shell with its rectangular :side Wall opening 28 thereof alined with the longitudinal slot 2li of the inside shell and also Vwith some portion .of the helical slot I4 of the spiral sleeve I3. The .sheet metal pin 2| in its complete form, as shown in Figs. 6 and '7, will then be alineci with `the three alined openings I4, 2B and 28 and inserted through the opening 28 of the carrier cup 1 8 Until the lugs vengage the outer wall of the inside shell I2. Then the outside yshell casing H is .iinally slipped over the assembled parts l2, I3. lil and 2l and `completes the assembly, after which a cover, not shown, may be'slipped over the outside shell. to complete the unit. The inner wall of the .outside shell casing li will retain the elevator pin 2| in'assembled position and'cause the biased lugs 24 thereof to operate Within the helical slot ifi.
The fact that the 4carrier cup rectangular' opening 228 is disposed in a vertical position serves to the lugs 24 to the helical slot I4, it can be seen that a round opening 28 of a size to accommodate the width of the pin body part rcan be provided in the cup I8 and operate eiiectively as Well. In this latter case, however, the desire to have the pin body part disposed in a plan substantially parallel to the cup aXis will be maintained by reason of the 4lugs yengaging in the helical s'lot' |13. and the factY that Ithey are substantially of a width to fill the transverse width of saidslot I4.
In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the thickness Ioi the blank 22 from which the pin 2| is fabricated is not quite as thick as the material from which the spiral sleeve I3 is made. Therefore, the lugs 2d do not completely ll the depth of the helical slot I4 Within which it operates, such as shown in Fig. 3. In Fig. 9 there is shown a modication wherein the lugs 24a are formed in an arc of considerably less radius than the radius of the inside shell l2 such that the particular arcuate formation -of the lugs will presen-t a tensioning lfactor between the adjacent Walls of the inside shell and outside shell casing `I2 and act to resist the carrier cup it from bei-ng forced back into the container it when applying the cosmetic material.
- In folding a i'lat blank of material upon itself such as to form the body part .-25 of the pin 2i as shown in Fig. 6, there is always a natural tendency of the material to expand edgewise beyond the normal Width of the blank out of which it is formed at t-he point where the severest fold is made. To overcome this tendency of the material to expand edgewisc, the blank 2.2 may be cut out as at 2B, in its opposite edges and symmetrical to the center -fold line 25 so that, when the blank `is folded upon itself, the leading edge 3S will be slightly less in width 4than 4the normal tion Where the narrower edge `of the double material 'thickness of said body `part is disposed in the carrier cup and thus presents the minimum `thickness of .the operating pin to the stick material 1| 9 when assembled there in place. Also Athe angular position of the lugs '2t as formed relatively vto the body part of the blank 22 and the fact `that `these lugs are bent along fold lines at right angl-es to blank aXis will dispose them vin the proper .angular position to be received and operated Within the helical slot I4. The width of the :lugs 2A, best shown in Fig. 5, is made slightly wider than the body 4part proper 25 of the blank 22 so that the transverse dimensions ofthe lugs 21| 4will be substantially equal to the transverse width of the helical slot and of a character to provide an easy slidable movement `'therethrough with as little play as possible.
While preference Vhas been given `to a rectangular opening 2B with its longitudinal axis 'parallel to the cup axis to maintain the body part 2B of the pin 2| in the desired position :to the :cup and.
Width of the double thickness of the body part .e 26 of the pin and present a somewhat leading tapering end to facilitate the assembly of the pin 2| and particularly its entrance through the opening 28 in the carrier cup.
It is .also within the puriew -of this invention to make a pin 2lb wherein there is only one thick nessof material constituting the body part of the pin proper. This modification is shown in Figs. 10 and 1l. The pin 2lb as shown in Fig. 10 is initially shown as formed yfrom a blank A22h comprising a straight body part 2Gb of single sheet thickness and an offset lug 21M) at one end thereof. The lug 24h similar to the lug-s of the iormof Fig. 5 is adapted to be bent along the -fold line 2lb at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the blank 26h, the lug 2417 preferably being arcuate as shown in Fig. 1i to conform to the diameter of the inside shell |2. Also if desirable this operati-ng Din with .a single type of lug may have its lug formed in an arc of a smaller radius so as 4to function in a like manner to the lugs described in lconnection with the modification shown in Fig. 9.
While the invention `embodying vthe pin .construction has been shown and described in :several diierent forms `for use in swivel type of lipstick containers, it will be understood that other changes and variations maybe made inthe speciiic .constructions shown and described .and applicable to other types of containers without departing from the scope of :the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a cosmetic holder of the character `described, an .outer casing, an inner tubular member rotatable in said casing and having a longitudinal slot, means associated with said outer casing providing for a helical slot,4 a carrier cup for receiving a cosmetic material and provided with a narrowaelongated rectangular wall opening longitudinally arranged and parallel` to the axis of the cup, the improvement which consists of an operating pin constructed from a blank of flat thin 'sheet material and comprising a at body part and an elongated lug bent on a line at right angles to the axis of the body part and disposed in a biased angular position relative to its connected end with the body part, said body part being positioned in the wall opening of said carrier cup and extending through said casing longitudinal slot, said wall opening serving to hold said bodypart in a plane parallel to the axis of said holder so as to present only a narrow edge of the body part to anymaterial telescoped into saidcarrier cup, and the biased angular position of said elongated lug causing it to lie within and conform to the angular pitch of said helical slot and adaptedto slidably operate therein. 2. In a cosmetic holder of the character described, an outer casing, an inner tubular member rotatable in said casing and having a longitudinal slot, means associated with said outer casing proi viding for a helical slot, a carrier cup for receiving a cosmetic material and provided with a narrow elongated rectangular wall opening longitudinally arranged and parallel to the axis of the cup, the improvement which consists of an operating pin constructed fromua blank of atthin sheet material and comprising a flat body part and an elongated lug of greater transverse width than said body part, said lug bent on a line at right anglesl to the axis of the body part and disposed in a biased angular position relative to its connected end with the body part, said body part being positioned in the wall opening of said carrier cup and extending through said casing longitudinal slot, said Wall opening serving to hold said body part in a plane parallel to the axis of said holder so as to present onlya narrow edge of the body part to any material telescoped in said carrier cup, and said lug by reason of its increased width and biased angular position relative to the body part being disposed in said helical slot and substantially lling the cross width of said helical slot and adapted to slidably operate therein.
3. A cosmetic holder as defined by claim 1 wherein the lug of said operating pin in addition to being bent substantially at right angles to said body part is formed in an arc conformable to the outside diameter of said inner tubular member.
4. A cosmetic holder as dened by claim 1 wherein the lug of said operating pin in addition to being bent substantially at right angles to said body part is further formed in an arc less than the outside diameter of the inner tubular member to thereby create a irictional factor between the outer casing and inner tubular member when said lug is operating within said helical slot.
5. In-acosmetic holder of the character described, an outer casing, an inner tubular member rotatable in said casing and having a longitudinal slot, means associated with said outer casing providing for a helical slot, a carrier cup for receiving a cosmetic material and provided with a narrow elongated rectangular wall opening longitudinally arranged and parallel to the axis of the cup, the improvement which consists of an operating pin constructed from a blank of fiat thin sheet material and comprising an elongated fiat body part of double material thick`A ness'joined together at one end by a folded portion, a pair `of lugs oppositely extending from` the other end of said body part substantially at right angles thereto and disposed in a biased angular position relative to their connected ends with the body part, said body ,part of double thickness positioned in the wall opening of said carrier cup and extending through said casing longitudinal slot, said wall opening serving to hold said body part in a plane parallel tothe axis ofsaid holder so as to present only a narrow edge of double material thickness of said body part to any material telescoped into said carrier cup, andthe biased angular position o! said opposed lugs causing them to lie within and conform to the angular pitch of said helical slot and adapted to slidably operate therein; e
6. In a cosmetic holder ofthe character described, an outer casing, an inner tubular member rotatable in said casing and having alon'gitudinal slot, means associated with said outer casing providing for a helical slot, a carrier cup for receiving a cosmetic material and provided ywith a narrow elongated rectangular walljopening longitudinally arranged and parallel to the axis of thecup, the improvement which consists of an operating pin constructed from a blank of flat thin' sheet material 'and comprising an elongated flat body part of double material thickness Joined together at one end by a folded portion, a pair of lugs oppositely extendingfrom the other end of`said body part substantially at right angles thereto, and disposed in a biased angular position relative to theiry connected ends with the body part, the transverse width of said lugs being of a width greater than said'body part. said body part of double thickness being positioned in the wall opening of said carrier cup and extending through said casing longitudinal slot, said wall opening serving to hold said body part in a plane parallel to the axis of said holder so as to present only a narrow edge oi double material thickness of said body part to any material telescoped into said carrier cup, and said lugs by reason of their increased width and biased angular position relative to said body part being disposed in said helical slot and substantially iilling the cross width of said helical slot and positioned in conformity to the angular pitch thereof and adapted to slidably operate therein.
7. A cosmetic holder as dened by claim 5 wherein the opposed lugs of saidv operating pin in addition to being bent substantially at right angles to said body part are formed in an arc conformable to the outside diameter of said inner tubular member.
8. A cosmetic holder as defined by claim 5 wherein the opposed lugs of said operating pin in addition to being bent substantially at 4right angles to said body part are formed in an arc less than the outside diameter of the inner tubular member to thereby create a frictional factor between the outer casing and inner tubular member when said lugs are operating within the helical slot. f i

As an article of manufacture, an operating pin for use with the carrier cup of the conventional swivel type lipstick container, said pin made from a single developed blank of at sheet material and comprising an elongated at body part of uniform width and lying in a single plane, and an integral elongated flat lug also of uniform width and bent on a line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said body part and lying ina'plane substantially normal to the plane sof said body part, said lug also being in a :biased angular position relative parti l 10. An article lof manufacture as ldei-ined by claim 9 wherein the Atransverse width of said lug is 'of slightly greater width relative lto the transverse width fof said body part.

An as article of fmanufacture, van operating-pin for use with the carrier cup of the conventional swivel type 4lipstick container, said pin made from a single developed blank of flat sheet material and comprising an elongated body part of'uniform width of double material thickness joined by' a folded, por-tion at' oneend and lying in -a single plane, and a pair of elongated lugs integral with the other end of the body part and bent oppositely from the plane of the body part on a line perpendicularto the body part and :lying in a plane substantially normal to the body part, said ylugs also being in a biased angular position relative to the plane of said body part.
-13.An article of manufacture as dened by claim l2 wherein the opposed lugs are of slightly arcuate formation 4along their longitudinal axis.
14. An4 article of manufacture as defined by claim 12 wherein the folded portion at one end of the body -part is of .slightly less width relative to the transverse width of said body part.
15. A pin blank for a lipstick containercons-isting of a single piece of thin dat sheet material adapted to be formed up into an operating pin-for the carrier cup of said container, said blank comprising la longitudinal straight body part of uniform width its entire length and presenting opposite upper and lower parallel edges, theupper edge being longer than the lower edge andan integral single lug also having parallel edges and extending from that end of the body part having the longer edge, said lug being axially shorter than the axial length of said body part and of a transverse width greater than the to the plane of said body transverse width of said body part and positioned on an upwardly directed obtuse angle relative to the longitudinal axis of said body part.

A` pin blank for a lipstick container consisting of a single piece of thin flat sheet material adapted to be formed up into an operating pin for the carrier cup of said container, said blank comprising an elongated body part of uniform width its 'entire length and presenting upper and lower parallel edges, and a pair of oppositely extending lugs having parallel edges and one only lextending from each opposite end of said body part, the transverse width of said lugs being greater than the transverse wid-th of said body part, and each of said lugs positioned on an outwardly directed obtuse angle relative to the longitudinal axis of said body part.
17. A pin blank as defined by claim 16 wherein the opposite parallel edges of said blank are formed with oppositely cut-in recesses substantially at a mid position relative to the length of the body part and of a length .approximating the double thickness of the blank.
