.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. ANDERSON, OF WATZIEEELB'I JRY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO SCOVILL MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON NECTICUT.
LIP s'rrcx' Application filed J'uly 2 7, 1926. Serial No. 125,247, I
This invention relates to certain improvements in'holders for cosmetic preparations.
In dispensing jcertain cosmetics, such as lipsticks, facial creams and the like, it is desirable that the cosmetic be carried in its container so that by the manipulation of the container the cosmetic may be protruded beyondthe end of the casefor use and withdrawn within the container when not in use by a simple manipulation of the container. Cosmetics of the type referred to are generally applied to the person of the user by rubbing. Where the cosmetic is carried in a container from which it is protruded and withdrawn,
it frequently happens that the pressure placed upon the cosmetic stick duringuse causesthe stick to slide back into' the container, thus causing 'a certain amount of annoyance to the user.
It is a special-object of the present inventionto provide a container for lipsticks and like cosmetics in which the cosmetic may be protruded and withdrawn, and in which the cosmetic is so supportedtin its container that it cannot be accidentally forced back into the container during use, so that after it-has been once protruded it may be used as long as de-' sired and then withdrawn or moved back into its container after its user is finished.
A further object of the invention-is to pro! vide an improved container for efi'ecting this of simple form and of few parts in which the stick may bereadily manipulated for use and non-use. i
With these and other objects not specifically referred to, the invention consists in cer tain novel parts, arrangements and combinations which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.
Referring now to these drawings,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container embodying the invention, the container being shown closed;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the container shown in Fig. 1, the container being shown as open but the cosmetic withdrawn into the container;
Figure 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 showing the cosmetic protruded for use;
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the container shown in the preceding figure, certain parts of the container being omitted to show the construction;
' of closure which may be used;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of, one type of propeller which may be employed for protruding the cosmetic stick;
Figure 7 is a broken developmentviewof the same, and
Figure 8 isa modified'form, of container which may be used within the-invention.
Referring-now to these drawings, the container is of a type in which the cosmetic is supported so that by rotating a part of the container a cosmeticmay be protruded for i use and withdrawn when the user has finished therewith. While various constructions may be employed for this purpose, in the particular construction illustrated the container comprises an outer casing 1 which is open at each end, this casing being stationary.
Within this casing is rotatably supported a tube 2 of light metal or the like whichis provided with a longitudinalsl'ot 3. This tube 2 terminates in ahead 4 which may conveniently form the bottom of the casing, this head he mg provided with a milled edge 5 to aiford a convenient finger grip for rotating the tube, andbeing provided with a flange 6 which has a butt engagement with the end of the outer caslng 1.
Within the tube 2 and having sliding engagement therewith, is a cosmetic holder in the form of a cup 7 in which is placed the cosmetic stick 8. This cup 7 is formed with a projection 9 which extends through and slides in the longitudinal slot 3-, before referred to.
This cosmetic stick is projected beyond the casing 1 for use and withdrawn into the easing for non-use, an improved propelling means being provided for effecting this. While the particular propelling device employed mayvary in construction, it will be of such character, in accordance with the invention, that the cup is prevented from an accidental movement back into the casing due to a pressure on theend of the cosmetic stick. A convenient construction for effecting this is that shown, in which the tube 2 is surrounded by a helix, the propelling spiral of which is. engaged by the projection 9 on the stick car? rier 7. This helix being stationary, by rotating the tube 2, the projection 9 is given a rotary and a longitudinal movement so that it moves up and down in the slot'3, and this projects and retracts the cosmetic stick 8.
'ience in manufacturing and as'sembling,these This helix may, of course, vary somewhat in construction, but as shown it is in the form of a sleeve 10 of light spring metal and is provided with an operating or propelling groove The means for preventing accidental movement of the cosmetic carrierinto the casing may, of course, vary within considerable limits, but preferably these means will be in the form of stops, a sufiicient number ofstops being provided to effect theirfunctinn as the cosmetic wears down and the cosmetic 4: of the tube before 'referre carrier is projected further and further to.-
ward the dispensing end of the casing. In
the best constructions, however, for convenstops are formed on the helix and, as shown,
"-the' helix is cut away to'form shoulders 12, three such shoulders being in stepped relation, and asshown in Fig. It is, of course, understood that any number of such shoulders desired may be employed. With this construction, as thetube is rotated, the projection follows the propelling groove 11 and rises above one of these stops. If now a direct pressure be exerted on the end of the lipstick, such as thatoccasionedby its use,
the projection will be forced against one "of these stops and a further rear movement of the projection cannot take place until the tube has been rotated in a reverse directionto clear the projection from'the-shoulder.
With this construction, therefore, the lipstick.-
cannot be accidentally forced backiinto the container. v
The-sleeve may be-positioned in the casing in any suitable manner. In the particular construction shown, the tube; 2 is provided near its outer end with a bead; 13 and the sleeve 10 beingresilient may-bedorced past this head and against the flan e-.6 of thehead d to,- the.sleeve being thus securely heldin sit-ion.
fThe container may be c osed in any suitable manner. As shown in Fig. 2, there is provided a cap 14 hinged to the container by means of a wire 'pintle 15 held in a bead 16 formed in the outerend of the casing 1. If desired, however, itmay' be closed by an ordinary slip cap-'17, such as shown in Fig. 8.
With the construction shown and described, it will be seen that avvery compact and simple container-has been provided, and.
one in which accidental displacement during use is eifectu'all-y prevented.
While the invention has been shown and described in its "preferred form, it will be understood that various changes maybe made in the propelling means and in the form of the stops without de arting from the invention as defined in t e appended claims.
What I claim is: 1. In a holder for cosmetics and the like,
the combination of an outer casing, a cosmetic holder mounted in the casing so as to have a longitudlnal movement the-rem, a propelling device for moving the holder in either direction, and stops concealed within the casin and with. which 'the cosmetic .holder is broughtinto engagement by pressure applied to a cosmetic carried in the holder for preventing inward longitudinal movement of the holder during the use of'the cosmetic, said stops being released by a re' verse movement of the propelling device.
- 2. In. a holder for cosmetics and the like, the combination of an outer casing, a cosmetic holder mounted in the casing-so as to have a longitudinal movement therein, a propelling device for moving the holder in either direction, and stops concealed within the casing and with-which the cosmetic holder is brought into engagement with pressure applied to acosmetic carried in the holder, said stops cooperating with the propelling devices for preventing inward longitudinal movement of the holder during the I use of the cosmetic, said stops being released by a reverse movement of the propelling device 3. In a'holder for cosmetics and thelike, the. combination of an outer casing, a rotatable tube in the casing having a longitudinal slot, a cosmetic holder in the tube and provided with a projection extending through the slot, a helix engaged by 'thepro-v jection for effecting a longitudinal movement of the holder in the casing and shoulders on the helixarranged for engagement by the projection on application of pressure applied to a cosmetic carried in the holder to prevent the carrier from inward longitudinal movement during the use. of the cosmetic.
4, In a holder for cosmetics and'the like, the combination of an outer casing, arotatable tube in. the casing having a longitudinal slot, a cosmetic holder in the tube and promy hand.
