Description

June 27, 19445 H. F. REICHENBACH HOLDER FOR LIPSTIQKS AND THE LIKE Filed-Dec. 16, 1943 Patented June 27, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HOLDER FOR LIPSTICKSANDI-THE LIKE.
Howard F. Reichenbach, Waterbury, Conn., assig'nor to Chase Brass & Copper Go., Incorporated, Waterbury, Conn., a corporation YApplication December 16, 1943, Serial' No. 514,515 401mm. (cl. 20e-56) The present invention relates to improvements in holders for lipsticks and other materials, and relates more particularly to holders of the general character referred to which are adjustable for purposes of advancing and retracting the contents of the holder as may be required by the user.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a superior adjustable holder for lipsticks and the like, which combines reliability of operation, low cost for manufacture and simplicity` of construction.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a superior holder of the character referred to in which superior means are provided whereby an advanceable-and-retractable carrier may be yieldingly held in a desired position of advancement or retraction to thus guard against the unintentional shifting of such carrier and its contents.
With the above and other objectsin view, as will appear to those skilled in the art from the `present disclosure, this invention includes all fea.- tures in the said disclosure which are novel over the prior art.
Y Inthelaccompanying drawing, in..which certain modesof carrying out the present invention are shown for illustrative purposes:
Fig. 1i is a view in side elevation of an adjustable holder for lipsticks and the like constructed in accordance with the present invention, with part of the shell-membershown in central-lon.- gitudinal section;
Fig. 2'is a View thereof in central-longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2.of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional viewtakenon the line 3--3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4 4 of` Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a view of the holder-structure inside elevationv with the shell-member omitted;
Fig. 6 is a broken View of the upper end of the shell-member shown in central-longitudinal section and in perspective;
Fig.7 is a transverse sectional. view of the shell-member taken on the line I-'I of Fig. 6; and
Fig. 8 is a perspective View of theactuatingpin.
The adjustable holder for lipsticks or the like which has been herein chosen for purposes of illustratingone embodiment of the present invention, comprises a cup-shaped.. carrier IU, a `substantially-cupV-shaped body-member II, a helically-split actuating-sleeve I2 and a tubular shell-member lf3; The said carrier=l0= may be conveniently produced of molded thermosetting material such as Bakelite,v while thev remaining parts* described may be. conveniently formed ofA sheet' metal, such as brass.
The. body-member- I'I isf formed at its lower end? with an integral laterally-extending angelike annularv operating-head:` M', while adjacent its opposite open endA the saidy body-member is formedv withV an annular outwardly-extending stop-bead' I5. Thevportion of the body-member lying above the. said: stop-bead may bel saidl to constitute anecki-portion Ii5a.
The cup-shaped carrier I0 before referred to is mounted Withfre'edom for reciprocation: axially Withinfthe interior" off the' body-member Il, and isadapted to carry a mass of vlipstick-material; IBf or such other Vmaterial "as may be -desired; Radially. mounted: in the lower portion of the carrierl IU is an. actuating-pin I1 having a head I8 flattened on each of its respective opposite sidesV andf adapted; to rid'e'in afhelical actuating-slot IQin the actuating-sleeve l2. The said actuating-pin also extends` throughv avertical guide-slot 2U formed: in the'body-member IIf and extending. therein from a. point. slightly above;- the operating-head: I4` to a point slightly Abelow ther stop-bead I5, as is indicatedin Figs. 1 and 2;
The-actuating-sleeve. I- 2 before'referred to is of7 a` length substantially` corresponding to the length between the upper surface'of the operating-head I4l of. the body-member II. and. the lower. or inner surface of the stop-bead I5 thereof. Inthev particular. instance shown, the actuf ating-sleeve I2' is rolled up from a vstripl of sheet metal, such as spring brass, in such manner as. t'c leave the helicalactuating-slot. lllbetween its convolutions' orreaches; andibyits own inherent expansibility the saidl actuating-sleeve frictional- 1y grips the interior surface-of the shell-member I3, sothat for allnormal operating purposes, the said actuating-sleeve I'2and the said shell-member I31areunitary. rlh'e i'lt issuchphowever.' that the body-member. I I mayY turn-` freely. within the said: actuating-sleeve I2,. though. held against axial. displacement' with respect` thereto"l by the juxtapositioning of the stop-head1 I5; and the upper. edge of the said actuating-sleeve` onone hand, and,y on the-other hand,.the juxtapositioning of. the lower endof` the said actuating-sleeve with-respect.. to the upper surfaceof. the operating-head. |41. The. upper1 edge-portiorrpf the vshell-member I3y is folded inwardly t'o provide a iinisliing-skirt 2|l extending in substantial parallelism with the cylindrical wall of the shell-member and is provided at its lower edge with three (more or less) downwardly-extending resilient retaining-fingers 22. The said retaining-fingers 22 (spring brass or the like) are preferably inwardly bowed intermediate their respective opposite ends so as to frictionally engage the outer surface of the neck-portion |50, of the body-member II which is located above the stop-bead I5.
To operate the adjustable holder above described, the user may hold the structure by grip-i ping the periphery of the shell-member- I3 in one hand and then by the other hand, rotating the body-membery II by means of its operating-head I4, to thereby bodily turn the actuating-pin I'I and the carrier I0. The turning action just referred to is eifected by one or the other of the Walls of the guide-slot 20 in the body-member II, the respective opposite ends of which guideslot serve torlimit the actuating-pin I1 and the carrier I in. their movements in a direction axially with respect to the said body-member. Owing to the frictional inter-engagement between the outer surface of the actuating-sleeve I2 and the inner surface of the shell-member I3, the said shell-member and the said. actuatingsleeve perform as a unit and do not ordinarily shiftwith respect to each other. Where, however, it is desired to disassemble the structure, sufficient force may be exerted downwardly on the operating-head I4 to overcome the friction and effect the withdrawal of the said actuatingsleeve I2.
By turning the operating-head I4 in a clockwise direction with respect to the shell-member I3, the actuating-pin I'I and hence also the carrier I0, will be caused to .ride in a helical path outwardly with respect to the structure so as to expose the lipstick-material I 6 at the open end of the device.
A reverse or counterclockwise turning movement of the operating-head I4 relative tothe shell-member I3 Will cause the retirement of the carrier I 0 inwardly toward the operating-head I4. When sufficiently retracted to bring the lipstick-material I6 within the open upper end of the structure, any suitable cap may be applied if desired to the open end of the structure.
In the turning movement of the operatinghead I4 as above described, the integral bodyl member II will be similarly turned to thereby cause the longitudinal guide-slot 20 thereof to force the actuating-pin I1 to travel in the helical path referred to. The turning movement of the body-member II will, however, be against the frictional restraint imposed thereon by the engagement of the resilient retaining-fingers 22 with the outer periphery ofits neck-portion I5a. Thus, when the lipstick-material I6 has been projected youtwardly to the desired extent, the frictional engagement just referred to will prevent the pressure on the lipstick-material from effecting the unintentional turning of the bodymember II within the shell-member I3;and will thereby stabilize the lipstick-material while the same is in use.
By-forming the retaining-fingers 22 or their equivalent upon the finishing-skirt; 2| orfother suitable portion inturned from the material of the shell-member I3, not only are the operational advantages obtained ask above referred to, but'the finish of the upper edge of the said shellmember is vastly improved in appearance and in its freedom from sharp edges.
Preferably, the retaining-fingers are formed on the finishing-skirt 2| before the same is turned inwardly with respect to the upper edge of the shell-member I3 of which it forms a part. By this procedure the formation of the retaining-fingers 22 or their equivalent is made convenient while the material is in an available position to be worked upon.
.The invention may be carried out in other specific ways than those herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and
all changes coming within the meaning and A equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
