W. G. KENDALL LIPSTICK HOLDER Filed June 13, 1939 INVENTOR W/II/am 6. Ken d0 ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 25, 1941 LIPSTICK HOLDER wma a. man, Newark, N. 1., mi ito Helena Rubinstein, 1110., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application June is, 1939, Serial No. 278,910
5C'lalms.
. My invention relates to lipstick holders and has for its obiect to provide a holder comprising a telescopically constructedcasing to enclose the lipstick material, whereby as thelatter is worn away in use the sections of the casing may be collapsed'one with the other to expose the tip 01' the lipstick. v
The present invention has the further advantage that as the lipstick material /being applied and is worn away, the sections the telescopic casing will automatically collapse so that the tip of the stick will always be exposedior use.
.I accomplish the objects of my invention by means of a device hereinafter described, set forth in the appended claims and illustratively exemplifled in the accom anying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational'view partly in section of my lipstick holder.
Figure 2 is a substantially longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fi ure 3 is an'elevational view of the holder collapsed.
Figure 4 is a substantially transverse sectional viewtakeninlinesHoiFigure 1.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modified form of my invention; and
Figure, 6 is a substantially transverse sectional view taken on lines 6-6 of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawing and particularly to Figures 1 to 4, l0 denotes a lipstick casing, II the lipstick material and I2 the cover.
The casing I0 comprises three cylindrical sections it, II and I5 telescopically arranged one within the other, the lowermost section I3 having a bottom It provided with a central threaded orifice l1; The upper end of the section it is provided with an inwardly projecting flange i8 and the inner end of the next section H is provided with an exterior flange or stop 19 which abuts the flange I! in the extended position of the two sections. The outer end of the midsection it carries an interior flange 20, which, in the manner of the flange l8, acts as a stop tor the exterior flange 2| of the outermost section 18 when the casing is fully extended. In use-the sections may be collapsed one within the other as illustratively exemplified in Figure 3. or extended as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The outer section I5 is provided, adjacent its outer end and exteriorly thereof, with an annular flange or lip portion 22. An annular channel piece 23 is arranged integral with the lower end of the section l2 as the exterior thereof and the groove 24 of the piece 23 opens out of the upper side.
section [3 is the lipstick holder 25, which comprises a threaded portion 26 to screw into the threaded orifice II, a knurled flange 21 abutting the base of the section II and projecting slightly beyond the latter to aflord a thumb grip. The holder or shank 25 receives and carries the lipstick material I I at one end thereof, theopposite end projecting upwardly through the three sec tions to protrude slightly beyond the outermost section i5 as shown in the various figures of the drawing.
The cover I2 is preferably a cylindrical member having its outer end closed to fit over the tip Aof the protruding lipstick H, and its lower end open to fit snugly into the annular groove 24 of the channel piece 22, as illustratively exemplified in Figure 1.
Referring now to the modification shown in Figures 5 and 6, all of the structure is the same, as that previously described, with the exception of the means used to removably mount the lipstick holder. In the modification the bottom iii of the lower section I3 is provided with an axially projecting ring 28 just inside the wall of the section, the ring extending for a short distance inside the latter and being provided with an axial slot 29 which opens out of the bottom IS. The
v wall of the cylindrical holder 25 is provided with Mounted in the base or bottom IE or the lower a radially projecting lug 30 which is spaced from bottom of the section I3 a distance equal to the depth of the ring 28 so that as the lug is inserted into the slot 29 and moved therethrough it may, by turning the holder 25, be shifted over the inner end of the ring 28. This position of the lug holds the holder 25 in the casing. A fin ii is provided on the under face of the bottom 32 of the holder whereby the same may be readily turned to remove or replace the holder.
In operation, the cover I2 is removed and the user applies the tip of the lipstick II in the usual way. .As the lipstick material is used, the pressure of the flange 22 against the lips of the user causes the outer section IE to push into the midsection It and further expose the lipstick as fast as the same wears away. The sections will continue to collapse until the entire lipstick has been used. A new lipstick may be substituted for the used one by simply removing the holder 25 and replacing it with a full stick at the same time opening up the casing in to embrace the new stick.
Having described my invention and the manner in which the same is operated, what I claim and desir to Secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a lipstick holder, the combination of a telescopic casing comprising a plurality of telescopingsections, one of said sections forming an end -section, the latter being provided with adjoini inside and outside fastening means, said inside and outside fastening means having substantially the same location on said end section but on opposite sides of the wall thereof, and lipstick supporting means removably disposed in said end section and provided with means adapted to fixedly engage and to disengage said inside fastening means. whereby said supporting means and the lipstick carried thereby may be iixedly secured inside said end section for use andremoved therefrom for refilling, and a cover for said casing adapted to engage the outside fastening means on the said" end section of the casing.
2. In a lipstick holder, the combination of a casing comprising a plurality of telescopically arranged sections, one thereof being provided in the immediate proximity of the edge thereof with & P je ti 11p portion of larger dimension than the diameter of the opening of the preceding section into which the said lip-bearing section is adapted to telescop'e, whereby said lip portion serves to contact the lips of the user, and prevent disengagement of the lip-bearing section from the preceding section, and a holder for the lipstick material removably supported in one of the sections, said lipstick material projecting through all of the sections and beyond said lip.
3. In a lipstick holder, the combination of a casing comprising a plurality of telescopically disposed sections, the section at one end being closed at its free end and the section at the,
outer end being provided with a substantially flat, horizontally projecting annular lip, the latter being disposed substantially at right angles to the axis of the device, a holder screwed into said closed end of the lower section, and alipstick mounted at one end in saidholder and projecting at its other end through the sections to a point beyond the outer section and the lip or flange thereof, whereby as the lipstick wears away at its end the flange presses against the lips of the user and the sections telescope to further expose the unused end of the stick.
4. In a lipstick holder, the combination of a telescopic sectional casing, the section thereof at one end having an interior ring provided with V a longitudinal slot, and a holder to support the lipstick material having a portion to be inserted in said ring and 9. lug to pass through said slot and by turning the holder to ride over the ring and hold the holder and lipstick material within the casing. I
5. In a lipstick holder, the combination of a casing comprising a plurality of telescopically arranged sections, one thereof being provided in the immediate proximity to the edge thereof with a projecting lip portion to contact the lips of the user, and a holder for the lipstick material removably supported in one of the sections, said lipstick material projecting through all of the sections and beyond said lip, the lower section of said casing being provided with an exterior grooved ring, and a cover closed at one end to house the lipstick and casing and open at its lower end to fit into said grooved ring.
