2Claims. (01.2065-56) invention relates to holders or containers for cosmetics. and particularly those whichare pr-ovide djin stick form; suchjas lipsticksandthe like; i
One of therobjects of the invention is to provide a holder or container ofthis character of simple form, which" may be 'inexpensively made and economically sold and which will be'provided with a minimum of parts yet shall be positive and eifective in operationand can be operated with one hand. i i V More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of an outer'or body shell of tubular form, closed at one end and open atits other end, and having a=cosmeticcup or lipstick holder slidably mounted within the body shell and being thus capable of movement toward or away from the openend ofthe. same; The bodygshell is provided in its side wall. with an aperture bounded by a pair of laterally-extending lugsor ears within which is rotatively mounted a roller that projects through the aperture in the wall of the body shell and has its peripheral edge in frictional contact with the surface of the cosmetic cup, thus providing an arrangement by means of which rotative movement of the roller will cause the cosmetic cup to be advanced or retracted, such movement being limited by stop means provided on the cosmetic cup.
With these and other objects to be hereinafter set forth in View, I have devised the arrangement of parts to be set forth and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein an illustrative embodiment of the invention is disclosed, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a cosmetic container constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a view taken at right angles to Fig. 1 of the container, with its closure cap removed and the cosmetic carrier or cup advanced to expose the cosmetic out of the open end of the body shell; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the cosmetic carrier or cup; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on a slightly enlarged scale, taken on the line 6-8 of Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawing, I indicates the body shell of the container, the same being of cylindrical form and preferably composed of metal, plastic or other suitable material. At one end, the body shell I is closed as indicated at 2, and the same is provided with an opposite open end 3 out of which the cosmetic material, which might be lip reuse or other cosmetic, or' othermaterial in tory to application to the lips.
The lipstick or other cosmetic material A is. mounted in a holder consisting of a carrier or cup 5shown most clearlyin Fig. 4: It will be therein" noted" that this carrier is of tubular cup-shaped form and isprovided with a centraLreduced-distick form and shown at 4, is pli iected preparaameter portion 6. At its forward end it'is provided with a larger-diameter .part I in which the cosmetic stick tisgfitted andfromwhich it pro trudes. At the opposite end of the carrier-is fltted a closure plug 8 which c'losessaid end of the j carrier and forms a largediameter part I6 cor responding in diameter to thatportion indicated at] located at the opposite end" of the carrier; Thefllarge - diameteri portions 1 and 8 are of a size that the same closely fit within the body shell I but'permit easy slidable movement of said carrier within the shell and in a direction axially of the shell. Such slidable movement serves to either advance the carrier to expose its cosmetic material 4 out of the open end 3 of the shell, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, or else retracts the cosmetic material within the shell and permits the placement of the cover or closure cap 9 over the open end 3 of the shell.
The means for moving the cosmetic carrier or cup in the manner described, consists of a roller HI preferably composed of soft rubber or other suitable resilient material. Said roller I0 is provided with an axle or pin I I rotative in laterallyextending lugs or ears I2 formed out of material of the body shell I, such material being provided by the formation of an aperture I3 in the side wall of the shell I. The axle II can be rotative in these ears or the axle can be fixed and the roller rotative on it. The aperture I3 permits the protrusion of a portion of the edge or periphery of the roller into the shell I and into frictional contact with the surface of the reduced-diameter portion 6 as shown at I8. This arrangement is such that when the roller is manually rotated by sliding movement of the thumb held against it, it will, through its frictional contact with the surface of the cosmetic carrier or cup 5, cause said carrier to be advanced toward the open end 2 of the shell or else retracted into the shell, according to the direction of rotation of the roller.
The provision of the closure plug 8 at the inner end of the carrier, results in the formation of an annular shoulder I4 near the inner end of the carrier or cup 5 and said shoulder acts as a stop or abutment that comes into contact with the roller I when the carrier or cup is moved to its limit of advancement out of the shell I and prevents further advancing movement of the carrier. The portion 1 also has a shoulder l5 at its inner end which may act as a stop against the roller to limit the retracting movement of the carrier 5 within the shell I, or this retracting movement can be halted by the inner end of the carrier coming into contact with the closed end 2 of the shell I.
From the foregoing, the operation of the cosmetic container will be apparent. By manual rotative movement of the roller [0, produced by sliding movement of the thumb held against it,
the roller will, by its frictional engagement against the surface of the cosmetic carrier, cause said carrier to be advanced or retracted as desired, the advancing movement of the carrier being limited by the shoulder I4 coming into contact with the roller. Through the arrangement described a simple and economical structure is provided which issmooth and effective in operation, requiring the use of only one hand for advancing or retracting of the lipstick.
While I have herein described the improved structure for use in connection with lipstick, it is obvious that the same may be used for other materials and purposes, such uses being intended;
as within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
What I claim is: 1. A cosmetic container comprising, a tubular open at the other end, a cosmetic cup of cylindrical form closely fitting and slidably mounted within the shell,said cup being provided with a rearwardly-extending stem of less diameter than the cup and of cylindrical form, said stem having a disk shaped head at its end remote from the cup, said disk shaped head being of a diameter substantially the same as that of the cup and Of. greater diameter than the stem, a soft roller rotatively mounted onthe outside of the shell, the shell having an aperture through which the roller partly protrudes to enter into the shell and frictionally contact the stem of the cosmetic cup,
the cup and the headon the stem acting as stops REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
