The invention relates to containers, and more particularly to holders for dispensing stick material and the like.
According'to one form of the invention, the container may comprise an outerholder tube in which is.disposed aninner operating tube. One longitudinal straight slot and the other tube may have a helical slot. Referring now to the drawings, and more par ticularly to the first species shown in Figs. 1 to 7, this container comprise i, operating tube 2, carrier 3 holding stick material 4 and a hinged cover 5. The holder, tube I may comprise a body 6 having relatively thick walls and made of moulded material, such as bakelite. The body 6 has an inner helical groove 8 and a reduced upper end in which tightly seats a sleeve I which is preferably'made of metal having a color contrasting with the color of the body 6 for artistic effect.
The cap 5 is provided 9 of any well known ,a purpose hereinafter described more in detail.

Forming part of the operating tube is a lower plate |4 having its edge rolled or spun over the flange i3, as indicated in Fig. l, to close the bottom of the container 5 and to provide a knurled hand engaging ring for 10 stick material 4 seating in the carrier 3.
The parts are assembled as. indicated in Fig. l which illustrates the closed position of the container with the lip stick fully retracted, the projection'i'l engaging the bottom of slot I2. After assembly, the tongue I5 is struck over to engage the upper edge of body 6 so that the body 6 is held between tongue l5 and the hand operating member l4. To use the container, the operating ring i4 is turned, the initial movement thereof causing the cam surface iii to ride under the projection I, this forcing the catch members It and il,
apart and putting these parts of the container under an elastic stress.
As the hand member I4 is turned still further, the end of the depressed portion i6 rides over the top of lug causing these parts which have been subjected to elastic strain to suddenly return to normal position, this giving the cover 5 an abrupt flip causing it to swing back to the position shown in Fig. 2. Further movement of the operating member i4 causes the stick material 4 to advance to the desired extent. After use, the operating member i4 is rotated in the opposite direction, causing the carrier to retract to the position shown in Fig. 1, after which the cover 5 is closed manually by the fingers.
Referring now to the second form illustrated in Figs. 8 to 10, this form comprises a holder tube 26, operating tube 24, carrier 25 holding the stick material 36 and a hinged cap 26. The holder tube 26 comprises a body .member 2| preferably of moulded material having a reduced upper end which tightly .seats the metal sleeve 22. The upper end of metal sleeve 22 is provided with an annular bead 26 and the body 2| has a helical slot 23. I
Cap 26 has a hinged connection 21 of the usual construction with the sleeve 22 and has a projecting tongue 26engaging the-annular bead 26 to form a snap catch. The top wall of the cap 26 is depressed or dished as indicated in Figs. 8 and 9. The operating tube 24, in the form shown, is made from flat stock rolled to form a tube and is provided with a straight slot 3|, annular flange 32 and an oblique upper edge forming, in effect, projections 33. Bottom plate 34 is secured to the tube 24 by rolling or spinning over its edges onto flange 32 to form a knurled operating ring or member for operating the container.
Carrier 25 has a projection 35 engaging in slots 23 and 3| and hasa plurality of nibs 36 for seating the stick material 36 as indicated.
Parts are assembled, as indicated in Fig. 8, which illustrates the fully retracted and closed position of the container with the projection 35 in the bottom of slot 3|. After assembly, the oblique projections 33 are bent over the upper edge of body 2| so that the body 2| is held between these bent over projections 33 and the hand operating member 34 in such manner that a small relative longitudinal motion is possible.
To operate the cgntainer from the closed posi-v tion shown in Fig. 8, the hand operating member 34 is pushed longitudinally upward to cause the oblique portions 33 to engage the cover 26. The
elasticity of the metal of bead 26 and tongue 26 causes the cover to open with a snap action taking the position somewhat as illustrated in Fig. 9. The operating member 34 is then rotated in the usual manner, causing the stick material 36 to advance the desired distance.
After use, the operating member 34 is rotated in the opposite direction to retract the stick material. The friction between ,the carrier member 25 and operating member 24 causes the latter to take itslowermost position as illustrated in -Fig. 8 so that after the stick material is fully retracted, the cover 26, which is closed manually, may be closed-without engaging the operating tube 24. It will be understood that there is enough friction between the parts to hold them together with reasonable tightness so that there is no loos'eness in operation.
Referring now to the third form illustrated in Figs. 11 to 1'7, this container comprises a holder tube 46, operating tube 4|, hinged cap 42, carrier 43 holding stick material 56 and finger piece Q4. The holder tube 46 comprises a body 45 of the general configuration shown in Fig. 17 having a sleeve 46 on its upper reduced end. The sleeve 46 has an annular bead 56. The body 45 has a straight internal groove 48 and a circular slot 49 having a vertical offset 56.
The cap 42 is provided with a catch tongue 55 forming a catch with the bead 56 so that when the cap is closed manually asnap engagement is obtained between tongue 55 and head 56. The operating tube 4| which may be made from flat stock has a helical slot 52 and an oblique projection 54 and an opening 53 as illustrated in Fig. 16.
The parts are assembled as illustrated in Figs.
11 and 13, Fig. 11 representing the parts in fully retracted position, and Fig. 13 illustrating the condition of assembly before the positioning of flngenpiece 44 and bottom plate 6|. The finger piece 44 has a pin 59 having an annular groove 66, the pin passing through slot. 56 with hole 53 being seated in the groove 66. After assembly, a bottom 6| may be secured to the holder tube 46 in any desired manner.
To operate the container, the finger piece 44 is advanced longitudinally in the offset 56. This causes the oblique portion 54 to engage the cover 42 overcoming the elasticity of catch parts 55, 56, causing the cover to snap open, as described above in connection with the other forms. The finger piece 44 is then moved around the circular groove 46, causing the stick material 58 to advance to the desired extent. piece 44 is rotated in the opposite direction to the offset 56, after which the cap 46 may be closed manually, the engagement of the cap 42 with the oblique portions 54 moving the finger piece 44 to the bottom of offset 56. If desired, finger piece 44 may. be moved to the bottom of offset 56 before the cap 42 is manually closed.
It will be understood that the thick walled bodies 6, 26, and 45 may be made of attractive moulded material; or, if desired, metal, while the sleeves 1, 22' and 46 are made preferably of metal and may have sharp contrast with the material of the body to produce an attractive appearance.

In a container, a holder tube, a cover, a hinge freely swiveling said cover directly to said holder tube, an operating tube within said holder tube and having a hand-engaging member on the bottom thereof, said tubes having intersecting slots, a carrier within said operating tube and having a part disbosed in said slots, resilient catch devices on said holdmube and cover, said carrier being fed by rotation of said hand-engaging member, said operating tube being directly engageable with said cover, whereby of said hand-engaging member overcomes said catch devices and causes the resiliency thereof to snap open the cover, said cover being closed manually.

said operating tube directly engaging said cover. whereby initial rotative movement 01 said handengaging member to advance the carrier causes said operating tube to engage said cover to said catch devices and cause the resiliency thereof to snap open the cover, said cover being closed manually.
