To all whom t may concern.'
Beit known that I, CHARLES Pmmorri, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencils; and do hereby declare the following to be a "full, clear, and exact description of the invention` such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pencils, and more particularly to a pencil of the type wherein the lead is normally disposed within the casing 'of the pencil when not in use and can be readily positioned for use when so desired and retracted into th?J casing after use to thus prevent the accidental breaking of the lead when carried about in the pocket. The main object of' the invention is the provision of a pencil ot' this character having a. suitable eraser attachment normally disposed within the casing of the pencil and provided with means for projecting the eraser from the casing upon release ot the same, the carrying member comprising' a suitable receptacle whereby additional lead for use in the pencil can be carried.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a pencil comprising a casingk in which all of the component parts 'are normally disposed within the casing so that the pencil can be readily carried about in the pocket or other receptacle and the lead readily positioned for use or retracted after use and wherein the eraser member can be quickly and readily brought into position for use trom within the casing.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features ot' construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the -claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

.In carrying out my invention I provide a suitable casing generally indicated by the numeral l, tubular in form and tapered at one end into a frustum of a cone 2 having an opening communicating With the interior of the casing through which the lead 3 is extended for use or retracted into the casing' when not in use.
Arranged within the casing is a tubular member 4 having a substantially conical shaped end portion 5 adapted to correspond with the cone portion 2 of the casing l so that the member 4 will it snugly within the cone end of the casing when placed in position as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The interior of this member 4is provided with screw7 threads from one end which extend to the cone portion 5 and mounted for threaded adjustment within this tubeV 4 is a sleeve 6, the exterior of which is threaded and adapted for adjustment within the tubular member 4.
The sleeve member 6 is mounted for sliding movement upon the rotating tube 7, the tube 7 extends into a central opening in the cone portion 5 of the tube 4 and is provided with a longitudinal slot 8 Yin which the pin 9 operates upon sliding movement of the sleeve 6 on the tube 7, the turning move` ment ot the tube 7 moving the sleeve 6 longitudinally upon the tube 7. Mounted for sliding movement within the tube 7 is a sleeve l() having yieldable opposed arcuate fingers ll formed at one end and adapted for sliding movement through the conical portion 5 of the tube 4 into the cone portion 2 of the casing l. It will be noted tiat the sleeve 10 is slightly tapered and the outer end of the tube 7 is also tapered at the point where it enters the conical portion 5 ot" the tube 4 so that upon movement of the sleeve l0, through the medium of the sleeye 6, the outward movement of the sleeve 10 will be limited to the position shown in Fig. 4 or 'until the larger portion of the cone shape of the sleeve l() reaches the tapered portion of the sleeve 7. Connected to the transverse pin 9 of the sleeve 6 is a ypush rod l2 which extends outwardly through the sleeve 10 Aand between the lingers Vll and adapted to have its outer end engage theL inner end of the lead 3 so that upon movement of the sleeve 6 toward the conical end of the casing, the rod 12 will engage the lead and pushl the sameoutwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4 and when the sleeve 10 and fingers 11. are in the position illustrated in Fig. 4,

sleeve 10 and fingers 11 will then be drawn into the casing, carrying the leadwith them.
It Will be noted that the rod 12 is used for projecting the lead outwardly as fast as it is worn off at the point, but the-sleeve 10 and fingers 1-1 retract the lead into the casing when not in use.l

r In order to provide means whereby the sleeve 16 can be readily rotated by the operator, I provide an enlarged head portion 20 having a sleeve 21 mounted upon the outer end of the sleeve 16 and secured thereto by means'of'the screw 22 so that when the head portion 20. is grasped by ythe fingers, the operator can readily rotate the sleeve 1,6 to osition the lead for use or retract the same nto the casing through the rotation of the sleeve 6 within the tube 4, said sleeve 6 and tube 4 bein provided -with corresponding screw threa s whereby upon rotation of the sleeve 6 it will be moved' longitudinally within the\tube 4.

posed within the casing and the coil spring 25 which is disposed between the closed end of the cylinder 23 and the inner end of the tube 7 under compression. In order to retain the cylinder 23 in position, the pover member 26 which is pivoted to the head 20 as at 27, is in its closed position and retained in this position by means of the spring catch 28 carried bythe head 20 andv engaging the catch 29 on the cover 26.. The inner face of the cover 26 is provided with a rubber facing y30 against which the eraser member 31 abuts to retain the cylinder 23 within the casing. The eraser member 31 is carried by a cap 32 threaded upon the outer end of the cylinder 23 so that when the eraser member 31 becomes worn down, it can be readily replaced with a new one by removing the cap 32 and putting a new eraser in the cap.
When it is desired to release the eraser member from within the casing, the catch member 28, is manipulated through the finger pin 33 which,A by pressing downwardly upon the fngerpin 33, will release the catch member 2.8 from the hook 29 so that the eraser member, through the tension of the spring 25 will be forced outwardly to its position shown in Fig. 4, and in order to imit the outward. sliding movement lof the cylinder 23 a stop ring 34 is positioned within the outer end-of thesleeve 16 and secured in place by having the inner end of the screw member 22 engaging with' the same.
From the above'J description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will'be readily apparent that the bperation of my improved pencil is as follows. When it is desired to extend the lead 3 to a position for use, the head 20 is grasped by the lingers of the operator and rotated, which in turn will impart a rotary movement to the sleeve 16, tube 7 andsleeve 6, the sleeve 6 being moved longitudinally within the tube 4 through the action of the screw'threaded connection between-'said sleeve 6 and tube 4, the movement of the vsleeve 6 carrying the sleeve 10 and rod 12 toward the conical end 2 of the casing l. From the position illustrated in Fig. 4, it will be noted that the lead 3 is. protracted to a position ready for use and should the lead be used to such an extent that it will become worn down to the cone portion 2, the head 20 can be ro- '.tated to slide the sleeve 6 longitudinally,
which in turn will move the rod'li out-` wardly and force the lead 3 to a position for 'further use. When it is desiredljbaretralct the lead 3 into the casing, the head2() is rotated in a reverse direction, the sleeve 6 moving within the tube 4 through vrotation of the tube 7 until the cross pin 9 strikes the pin 13 so that the sleeve 10 and fingers 11 which grasp the lead 3 will be moved longitudinally into the casing, carrying the lead with them. i
Should it be found necessary to use the eraser member 31, the finger pin 33 can be pressedtol release the cover 26 and permit the eraser to be protracted from the casing through the medium of the sprin which is normally under tension when tg 23 carrying the eraser 31 is disposed within the casing. From this it will be apparent that I have rovided asimple and compact pencil whereln. the lead and eraser member are normally carried within a suitable protecting casing and can be readily positioned for use when desired or arranged within the casin when not in use. l,
