(015120-38) My invention relates to new and useful improvements in eraser holding mechanisms and in particular'to'those' mechanisms for propelling or retraz zting the eraser into the eraserholder.
It an object of my invention to provide an eraser holding mechanism which includes propel andretract means for the eraser and which maS bei'ncluded as a part of a mechanical pencil.
Another object of my invention is the provision of'arr improved mounting for theworking parts of an eraser propel and retract mechanism which may be usedin a mechanical pencil.
Another object of my invention is the provision of'an eraser holding mechanism for propelling and retracting an eraser into operative positionin which the parts are-uperatively fastened together and become a part of'a mechanical pencil.
A further object of my invention is the provision ofarr eraser propel and retract mechanism for an elongated: eraser which: is simple to operate, sturdyin: construction, and which may be manufactured at a relativelysmall cost;
A still-further object of my'invention is the provision of an eraser holding: mechanism which has an elongated screw forpropellingior-retractin the said eraser.

My eraser holdingmechanism; as illustrated in- Figure- 1-, comprises generally a barrel l9 and an elongated era-ser'assembly I which may be propelledczor retractedi alongan'gelongat'ed screw l 5 supportedwithinthebarrell ll. Asshowminzfi'igeure 1, the barrel is may be equivalent to the barrel of the pencil or it may be a barrel constructed for only an eraser holding mechanism. The elongated eraser assembly H is carried by an eraser magazine I2 mounted within the barrel. An inner sleeve 5 8 extending about the eraser magazine [2 and betwen the eraser magazine andthe barrel, and anchored to the barrel id, is employed to support the eraser magazine within the barrel. A collar I l; frictionally engaging the eraser magazine l2, and abutting the end of the barrel ii! is used to-provide a finger-grip surface. To propel or retract the eraser assembly 5 I along the screw l 5 the operator rotates the barrel 8 El with respect to the collar M, or rotates the collar M with respect to the barrel l9.
As shown in Figure 2, the elongated eraser assembly H comprises an elongated'eraser IS havingan eraser ferrule 2i! on one end thereof. The eraser ferrule 20 has a threaded opening 2i for engaging' the elongated screw H5. The threaded opening in the ferrule is in alignment with the longitudinal axial opening 22 in the eraser. The cylindrical surface 23 of the eraser frctionally engages the inside surface 24 of the eraser magazine." The eraser magazine 22 includes an eraser support portion 25 and a head portion 26. The elongated" screw i5 is non-rotatably fastened in the center of the head portion 25. This screw i5 is mountedin thehead portion 25 and extends co-axial of" the longitudinal axis of the eraser magazine; An internal circumferential rib 28 on the inside of the support portion 25 and engaging a circumferential groove 2'! of the head portion 26 permitsrevoluble movement of the eraser support portionwith respect to the head portion. This rib portion 28 prevents longitudinal movement of the eraser support portion with respect to the head portion 26 ,and' does not allow the eraser to push theeraser magazine i2 out of the barrel i t of the pencil when the erase is being ejected. Although' I have used the rib portion 28, it is understood that other suitable means may be employed to permit the revoluble movement and at the same time prevent longitudinal movement of the eraser support portion 25 with respect to the head portion 25. Thehead portion 25 may be non-rotatably fastened with respect to the'barrel is by a head portion anchor pin 29 extending through the-inner-sleeve i 3, and into the head portion 26. The inner sleeve: Isis anchored to the barrel ill by an-anchorpin 33. Thus it is seen that by turne ing the support portion 25 of the eraser magazine with; respect tor'thebarrel; lllthe eraser assembly is turned about the screw I5 for propelling the same longitudinally along the screw.
The collar M has an end portion 35 which extends over the outer end 34 of the inner sleeve [3 and abuts against the end 36 of the barrel. The outer diameter of the collar is substantially equal to the outer diameter of the barrel III. The inside surface 38 of the collar frictionally engages the outside surface 39 of the eraser magazine and cooperates therewith. An ornamental band 31 may be fastened by suitable means to the collar M for extending over the end 35 of the collar and the end 36 of the barrel. This band 31 may be constructed of any suitable material and is employed to make the pencil more attractive to the eye. The collar I4 carries a pocket clip II; for clipping the pencil in a pocket or for other similar uses. This clip [6 has an extension end l8 which fits in a longitudinal groove ll on the inside surface of the collar IA. The clip extends outwardly through an opening 3| in the collar at the end of the groove H. The clip I8 becomes anchored with respect to the collar when the collar is frictionally fitted or slipped over the end of the eraser magazine. The magazine holds the extended portion of the clip within the groove,
In operation, a person using the eraser may rotate the collar in one direction with respect to the barrel, 0r rotate the barrel with respect to the collar, to propel the eraser outwardly and into operative position. The eraser support portion is prevented from moving longitudinally with the eraser by rotatably fastening it to the head portion. The eraser is rotated with the collar about the screw when the collar is rotated with respect to the barrel. As the eraser turns with respect to the screw it moves longitudinally of the screw. As the eraser moves longitudinally of the screw it is either propelled outwardly or retracted inwardly of the barrel. When the eraser is not in use the operator may retract the eraser inwardly into the eraser holding mechanism by rotating the collar in the opposite direction with respect to the barrel or rotating the barrel in the opposite direc- Y tion with respect to the collar.

This application is a continuation in part of my abandoned application Serial No. 559,037, filed October 17, 1944.
What is claimed is:
1. An eraser holder for an elongated eraser comprising. a barrel, an eraser magazine turnably mounted within the said barrel and extending outwardly therefrom for supporting said eraser, an inner sleeve extending about said eraser magazine substantially within the barrel, said inner sleeve being anchored to said barrel for supporting said eraser magazine, said eraser magazine including an eraser support portion and a head portion with the head portion anchored to the said inner sleeve, said eraser support portion rotatably but not longitudinally movable with respect to said head portion, an elongated screw supported by,the said head portion and anchored thereto with the elongated screw extending substantially co-axially of the eraser magazine, a collar frictionally fitting about said eraser magazine and an inner sleeve extending about said eraser magazine substantially within the barrel, said inner sleeve anchored to said barrel for supporting said eraser magazine, said eraser magazine including an eraser support portion and a head portion with the head portion anchored to the said inner sleeve, said eraser portion rotatably but not longitudinally movable with respect to said head portion. an elongated screw supported by the said head portion and anchored thereto with the elongated screw extending substantially co-axially of the eraser magazine, a collar frictionally fitting about said eraser magazine and abutting the end of the barrel, said collar and said barrel having substantially equal outside diameters, said eraser having a ferrule on the end thereof and an opening therein, said ferrule having an opening there-' in and aligned with said opening in the eraser for threadably cooperating with the elongated screw whereby when the collar is rotated with respect to the barrel, the eraser is propelled along the elongated screw.
3. An eraser holder for an elongated eraser having an axially disposed opening, said eraser holder comprising, sleeve means, an eraser magazine turnably mounted within said sleeve means and extending outwardly therefrom for supporting said eraser, said eraser magazine having an eraser support portion and a head portion, said head portion having an annular groove and said support portion having means fitting into said an-' nular groove, whereby the eraser support portion is rotatably but not longitudinally movable with respect to said head portion, an elongated screw non-rotatably supported by said head portion and extending co-axially of the eraser magazine and into the opening of said eraser, said eraser and said screw having cooperating means for propulsion of the said eraser along the said'screw by rotation of the said magazine with respect to the said sleeve means.

In a mechanical pencil, an elongated feedable and retractible eraser assembly having a threaded opening, a first substantially cylindrical member frictionally engaging and supporting said nular groove whereby said first cylindrical member is constrained against axial movement'with respect to said second cylindrical member but is turnable therewith for propelling and retracting the eraser assembly along the screw.
5. In an eraser holder for an elongated eraserassembly having a threaded opening, a support member for frictionally engaging and supporting said eraser assembly, sleeve means extending substantially about said support member, screw means supported within said sleeve means and non-rotatably anchored thereto for threadably engaging the threaded opening of said eraser assembly, said sleeve means having internal means connected thereto, said internal means having an annular groove, said support member having radially extending means fitting into said annular groove whereby said support member is axially constrained but turnable with respect to said sleeve means for moving said eraser assembly axially of the screw means.

In an eraser holder for an elongated eraser, a barrel, an eraser holding member carried by said barrel, said barrel having an internal means connected thereto, said internal means having an annular groove, said eraser holder member having radially extending means fitting into said annular groove whereby said eraser holding member is axially constrained against movement with respectto said barrel, and operative means for moving said eraser axially of said eraser holder.
