ATTOQMEYS United States Patent SHOE POLISH APPLICATOR Scott W. Brown and Andrew A. Kraynak, Pocatello, Idaho Application November 5, 1954, Serial No. 467,011
2 Claims. (Cl. 15210) The present invention relates to shoe polish applicators and in particular to one having a compressed wool felt swab which is used for surface dressing shoes.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a shoe polish applicator using compressed Wool felt in a casing and projecting from one end thereof so that the projecting end of the felt may be used to apply polish.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a complete shoe polish applicator in a casing with a cover and one which can be readily carried in a hand bag, pocket, or the like without any danger of the polish ingredient coming 01f the swab portion of the invention.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a light weight shoe polish applicator containing a wool felt swab which may be cut off when soiled or worn, or replaced when a change of color is desired.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a shoe polish applicator casing which may be constructed of light weight metals either cast or drawn on conventional metalworking machinery, or may be cast or formed on plastic making machinery.
These and other objects of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the assembled casing with its cover;
Figure 2 is a vertical view in cross section on line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an end view in cross section on line 3-3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a partial side view in cross section on line 44 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in greater detail, in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the invention is seen to consist of a casing made of light weight metal or plastic or the like and having an open end 11 formed with shoulders 12 partially closing the open end 11. A felt wool swab 13 is shown in the casing 10 and it is made up of a relatively hard body of wool compressed and substantially filling the casing 10. One end of the felt swab 14 projects from the other end of the casing which has similarly inwardly bent edges or shoulders 16 which restrain the swab from movement out of the opening. The casing 10 is undercut on its outer end where the swab 13 projects so that the cover 18 has a shoulder or rim on which to rest when it is in closed position.
A slot 19 is cut in one side of the casing 10 and has a slide member 21 connected to the casing in the slot and movable backward and forwardly longitudinally with respect to the casing 10.
On the side of the casing opposite to the slide member 21 and the slot 19 is a rivet 22 which supports one end of a flat leaf spring 23. The free end 24 of the spring 23 projects inwardly into the casing and engages on the side of the swab 13 to prevent movement of the swab backwardly into the casing after it has been pushed by the teeth 25 of the slide 21. The teeth 25 engage the swab 13 only in one direction and the slide member 21 may be moved backwardly in the casing 10 without pushing the swab with it.
In use the swab is projected out of the casing 10 and when worn out or soiled can be replaced with a new one which is inserted into the casing 10 by Way of the opening 11.
While only a single embodiment has been here shown and described, other embodiments may be made and practiced and many changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. An applicator for shoe polish comprising a casing, a swab disposed in said casing and being compressed into a relatively hard body filling said casing and projecting from one end of the latter, said casing being formed with a slot arranged longitudinally with respect thereto and adjacent said one end of said casing, a slide member connected to said casing in said slot for backwardly and forwardly movement longitudinally thereon, means embodying teeth on said slide member engaging said swab and operable to propel said swab out of said casing upon forward movement of said slide member, means embodying a leaf spring positioned within and carried by said casing and having a free end engaging said swab and operable to prevent movement of said swab back into said casing.
2. An applicator for shoe polish comprising a casing, a swab disposed in said casing and being compressed into a relatively hard body filling said casing and projecting from one end of the latter, said casing being formed with a slot arranged longitudinally with respect thereto and adjacent said one end of said casing, a slide member connected to said casing in said slot for backwardly and forwardly movement longitudinally thereon, said slide member being engageable with said swab, means embodying teeth on said slide member operable to propel said swab out of said casing upon forward movement of said slide member, means embodying a leaf spring positioned within and carried by said casing and having a free end engaging said swab and operable to prevent movement of said swab back into said casing, and closure means for said casing covering the projecting end of said swab when in closed position.
