GATE-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentedreb; 5, 191%..
Application filed spteint'rasjisiv. Serial No. 193,142.
To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HEN RY Dnw, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mercer, in the county of Madison and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvments in Gate-Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a gate latch and has for its object the production of a simple and efiicient latch which will engage a lug carried by a swinging gate and hold the same from accidentally opening when the gate is once swung to a closed position.
Another object of the present invention is the production of a simple and efficient latch which may be cheaply constructed and which will be held in a set position for holding the same in proper alinement for latching the gate.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangemets of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings;
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a gate in a closed position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the gate and latch, a portion of the abutment post being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the latch, the latching lug being shown in section.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the frame for carrying the latching rings.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the gate which is pivotally supported upon the supporting post 2. The gate is provided with a latch lug 3 at its outer end as shown clearly in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive of the drawings.
The abutment post 4: is placed near the outer side of the gate 1 and this post 4 carries a latch ring supporting frame 5.
This latch ring supporting frame 5 is provided with an inwardly extendedlug 6 adapted to rest snugly against the front face of the post 1. This latching ring supporting plate 5 is preferably formed of a single sheet or strip of material having one laterally extending finger 7 projecting from said lug 6 and an elongated finger 8 projecting from the opposite side of the lug 6. This finger 8 is folded backwardly upon itself to produce a ring supporting loop 9 and is folded inwardly centrally of the frame 5 for closing the inner end of the loop 9 as indicated by the numeral 10. A securing screw 11 passes through this inwardly bent portion 10 for securing the ring supporting casing 5 upon the post 4:. This finger 8 is then bent outwardly and extending substantially parallel to the finger 7 and constitutes a pocket 13 for receiving the latching ring 14. A similar latching ring 15 is mounted or placed within the pocket 9.
A pin 16 passes through the outer end 12 of the folded finger 8 and also through the finger 7. This pin 16 is driven into the post 4.- and, it will be seen that the pin 16 will perform a two fold function by closing the outer end of the loop or pocket 13 and also by holding the frame 5 against rotation.
A pin 17 passes transversely through each loop 9and 13 for retaining the rings 1-1 and 15. These rings may be moved vertical within the pockets or loops 9 and 13 for permitting the lug 3 to pass through the end of the finger 12 and the finger 7 as shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings. As soon as the lug 3 is placed between the rings 14 and 15 such as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the gate will be held from accidentally swinging to an open position. When suitable pressure is exerted upon the ring 14: or 15, the same will readily move to a vertical position. Under ordinary circumstances, the rings 14 and 15 will hold the lug 3 in a fixed position and prevent the gate from accidentally swinging to an open position.
What I claim is 1. A latching device for a gate comprising a latching frame, means passing through the center of said latching frame for securing the same to a support, latching rings carried by the respective ends of said latching frame, and means passing through one end of said latching frame and engaging a support for holding said latching frame from swinging upon said support.
2. A latching member for a gate comprising a latching frame having a centrally located inwardlyextending lug, said latchingframe being formed of a single sheet of material and folded at one end to produce a latching ring supporting loop, securing means passing through said lug and through and a pin passing through the outer end 0 the inner end of said latching ring supportsaid jaw and said finger for closing the end ing loop for holding .said frame upon a of said second ring supporting pocket and support, said frame provided with a second also for holding said frame from rotating 10 laterally extending finger, said frame also upon a support.
provided with a laterally extending jaw for V In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my producing a second ring supporting pocket signature.
