Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,884, dated February 20, 1872.

Specification describing an Improvement in Blocks for Cartridge-Boxes, invented by J 0- SEPH W. FRAZIER, of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey.

Cartridge-Blocks.

My invention consists of cartridge-blocks hinged together, as fully described hereafter, so that they can be readily folded for adjustment in a cartridgebox, and as readily unfolded for adjustment in a knapsack.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cartridge blocks hinged together; and Fig. 2, a perspective View, showing the blocks secured in a position to be inserted in the cartridge-box.

General Description.

A and A are two wooden blocks, each having a number of receptacles for cartridges, the two blocks being hinged together at a and secured at the opposite ends by a hook, b, or other suitable fastening. The cartridges in the lower block are held in place by a strap, B, attached at D to one end of the block and buttoned to the opposite end, as shown on the drawing. such dimensions as to fit into an ordinary cartridge-box, or into the box for which I have made a separate application for a patent, the latter box being of about the same dimensions and holding about the same weight of ammum'tion as a common box. When the upper tier of boxes has been exhausted both wooden blocks are withdrawn from the body of the I box and reinserted therein after being reversed,

are removed and are then brought on a line with each other, as shown in Fig. 1, and introduced into the knapsack, in which they serve as strengthening-ribs, taking the place of the ordinary wooden strips or blocks used for the same purpose, the room originally occupied by these strips being thus utilized, and the necessity of carrying any useless weight being avoided.

In ordinary double or reversible cartridgeblocks the flap for confining the cartridges when the blocks are reversed, is secured to the side of the block, which, therefore, requires a wider box for its reception, while the flap, instead of remaining in its position after uncovering the cartridges, almost invariably returns to its place and greatly impedes the operations of the soldier. In the improved blocks above described the flap or strap B being hung to the edge of the block does not increase its thickness, and owing to its flexibility will remain in its position after uncovering the cartridges, which may be rapidly removed without impediment.
