I V/TlVESSL'S: INVENTOR.
THE NORRIS PETERS Co WASHINGTON, n c
NICHOLAS F. ALSTON, OF INEZ, NORTH CAROLINA.
CASE FOR WHIPS OR LIKE ARTICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 22, 1908.
Patented Jan. 19, 1909.
Serial No. 434,232.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS F. ALSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Inez, in the county of Warren and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases for Whips or Like Articles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a case for whips or like articles and more particularly to a device of that class for use in carrying a number of sample whips or the like, the respective ends of which articles vary in diameter; the object of my invention being to provide a device of that class having a permanently shaped body of substantial interior area, and a detachable, and preferably flexible, member for covering and securing the contracted or lash ends of the whips or like articles. In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved detail of structure, which will presently be fully described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure I is a perspective view of a case constructed according to my invention, as it appears when containing a number of whips or like articles. Fig. II is a longitudinal, sectional view of same. Fig. III is a perspective view of an empty case, showing the flexible member contained in the rigid body member.
Referring more in detail to the parts :-1 designates the rigid body member, which is preferably sha ed as a frustum of a pyramid, and provided with a lid 2, having a hasp 3 adapted for cooperation with a suitable lock 4 carried on the body 1; the larger end of the body being closed, as illustrated in Figs. I and II, the small end open, and the edge of such body adjacent to the open end being provided with projecting loops 5.
6 designates a flexible extension, preferably conical in shape and having its open end adapted to fit over the open end of the body 1; such extension being provided with loops 7 similar to the loops 5 on the body member, and both the body and extension loops being adapted to receive a strap 8 for the purpose of binding the two case members together.
9 designates a stiffening member of substantially the length of the combined body 1 and flexible member 6, which may be inserted into the case to retain same in the extended condition shown in Figs. I and II,
so that when whips or like articles 10 are contained in the case the flexible member may not bend and allow breakage of the lash or contracted ends of the Whips or like articles.
WVhile the stifl'ening member 9 may be of a suitable construction, I prefer to joint same in convenient lengths so that when the case is empty it may be knocked down to the shape indicated in Fig. III, where the flexible end is contained in the rigid body memher and the joint stiffening member 9 preferably carried therein.
When in use, the flexible member 6 is attached to the open end of the body by means of the loop and strap arrangement shown and described, and the lid 2 open to permit the insertion of the stiffening member 9 and the lash ends of the whips; the butts being contained within the enlarged body portion. WVhen a suitable number of whips are so placed in the case, the lid may be closed and locked and carried from place to place by means of the handle 11. WVhen the whips are removed the stiffening member may be unjointed and placed within the rigid body portion, and the flexible extension placed therein as indicated in Fig. III, when the entire case will occupy but a small space and be convenient for carrying or shipping.
Having thus described my invention what I claim to be new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A case for whips or like articles, comprising a rigid body member, permanently closed at one end and open at the other, and a flexible extension fitted over the open end of said body member, said body member being provided with a side opening having an inclosing cover, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A case for whips or like articles comprising a ri id body member, open at one end, a flexible extension fitted over the open end of said body member, and a jointed stiifening member adapted for jmetainin'g fsaid extension -throvigh the loops "on said ibOdY fiexibleextensio'n in its extended "posit-ion. and flexible "member's, substantia'liy as set 3.
