Description

c, BERGMAN & J. W. PILKINGTON.
CARTRIDGE-BOX.
Patented Nov. 28. 1876.
No.184,-8ZZ.
R 0 M m m h mains. Rue
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES BERGMAN AND JOSEPH W. PILKINGTON, OF BRIDGEPORT, GONN.; SAID BERGMAN ASSIGNOR TO SAID PILKINGTON OF AN ADDITIONAL ONE-SIXTH UNDIVIDED INTEREST.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,822, dated November 28, 1876 application filed May. 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES BERGMAN and JOSEPH W. PILK1NGTON,.0f Bridgeport, in the county of Fair-field and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Boxes and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a cartridge-box, which is intended for use by soldiers and others having breech-loading fire-arms, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, reference being had to accoin panyin gdrawin gs,
forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the cartridge-box with the flaps open, and Fig. 2 represents a section, taken crosswise through the same. 4
In the drawings, A represents the usual form of leather cartridge-boxes, having the usual flap B, connected, when closed, to the button g at the bottom of the same. To the inner wall or back of the case are attached the cartridge-receivers O C. These receivers are preferably arranged in sections on a line, and in tiers, one above the other, as shown in the drawing.
Each receiver is composed of a box, made of leather or other suitable material, having partitions a a, for holding the cartridges, and is hinged at or near the bottom by a hinge, b, and connected at the top to the back of the box or case A by a flexible strip of leather or I are placed in the cases, which are so arranged that the ends or tops of the cartridges will stand out a little distance. I then button down the flap, and in doing so the flexible stay allows the tops to be forced in so that the bottom and top are in range.
In using the case I uubutton the flap, and the top of each case drops by its own weight into position.
We do not, broadly, claim a cartridge-box provided with pockets, attached by pliable fabric to the body of the cartridge-box to allow the cartridges to be turned with their heads outward, as we are aware that such is not new.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the case A, having flap B, the boxes 0, hinged at b to the back ofthe same, the flexible strips D D, connecting the boxes at the top to the case, and the additional flap D, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands thisl9th day of August, 1875.
CHARLES BERGMAN; JOSEPH W. PILKINGTON.
